The Madison County Nature Trail, also known as Green Mountain Nature Trail, is a 72-acre park located atop Green Mountain in southeast Huntsville, Alabama. Established in 1975, this scenic park offers visitors a serene escape from the surrounding urban areas.
At the heart of the park lies Sky Lake, a 17-acre body of water that serves as a focal point for many of the park's activities and attractions. A 1.5-mile trail loops around the lake, providing an easy and family-friendly hiking experience suitable for visitors of all ages.
The park's diverse landscape includes wooded areas that are home to various wildlife species, including deer, ducks, geese, and numerous bird species. This natural setting has earned the park recognition as a Treasure Forest by the Alabama Forestry Commission and designation as a Wildlife Sanctuary.
Throughout the year, the Madison County Nature Trail offers different experiences for visitors. In winter, when trees have shed their leaves, the park provides excellent opportunities for wildlife spotting and observing the park's fungi and year-round green plants.
The Nature Trail is open to the public every day from 7 a.m. until 30 minutes before sunset, closing only on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. There is no charge for admission, making it an accessible destination for locals and tourists alike.
