About Aesop Park
Park Overview
Nestled in Richmond Valley, Staten Island, Aesop Park is a cozy 0.902-acre green space that sits at the corner of Page and Bartow Avenues. Developed in 2001, this little park was created to serve both the students of the newly renovated P.S. 6 and the surrounding community. Though modest in size, this well-shaded space provides a peaceful escape for anyone looking to take a breather from city life.
Design & Inspiration
The park draws its name from Aesop, the Greek storyteller whose fables have endured for centuries. In a thoughtful touch, the designers created an urban forest setting with 200 trees that provide welcome shade and create a natural backdrop for the park's various features.
At the heart of the park sits a 200-person amphitheater - a great spot for community performances or simply gathering with friends on a nice day.
Sculptures & Educational Elements
Walk through Aesop Park and you'll encounter several sculptures that bring the ancient fables to life. Characters including a fox, hare, tortoise, gnat, and bull are scattered throughout the grounds. The giant bull statue is particularly noticeable and has become something of a local landmark.
One of the more clever features is a sundial inscribed with "slow and steady win the race" - a nod to the classic tortoise and hare story that many of us grew up hearing. At the entrance, you'll find a granite ID plaque that completes the educational theme.
Take a moment to read the historical information posted at the entrance to get a better sense of the park's background and significance.
Recreational Features
If you're visiting with kids, they'll appreciate the playground with jungle gym equipment where they can climb and play. On hot days, the splash fountain provides a wonderful way to cool down - just remember to bring a change of clothes if you're planning to get wet!
Benches are scattered within the park, offering plenty of spots to sit and relax, read a book, or simply watch the world go by.
Environmental Design
What makes Aesop Park special is how thoughtfully it integrates recreational areas with the existing woodland. Rather than clearing everything out, the designers preserved natural site areas while adding modern amenities. Former NYC Parks Commissioner Stern notably described the park's architectural design as "one of the most magnificent" he'd seen during his fifteen years as commissioner.
Management
The park operates under the joint management of NYC Parks and the Department of Education, reflecting its dual purpose of serving both school students and the wider community. The space supports education, recreation, and creativity within Staten Island's network of green spaces.
