About Barretto Point Park
A Waterfront Escape in the Bronx
Located in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx, Barretto Point Park offers a refreshing escape from city life right on the East River. Since opening in 2006, this 6-acre park offers locals a bit of nature and spectacular views.
The park beautifully preserves the rustic charm that once defined Hunts Point, creating a space where you can breathe a little easier. From here, you can take in stunning panoramas of the East River, the Manhattan skyline, and the North and South Brother Islands - bird sanctuaries that remain delightfully untouched by human visitors. The sunsets here are particularly impressive.
Thoughtfully Designed Spaces
The park's rolling landscape slopes toward the water. Perhaps the most unique attraction is the Floating Pool Lady - a converted 20,000 square-foot barge housing a 25-meter swimming pool that's been anchored here since 2008. This exceptionally clean pool becomes the neighborhood's hotspot during summer months.
The floating pool actually revives a wonderful tradition from the late 19th and early 20th centuries when similar barges served as public bathing facilities for tenement residents. Just remember that proper swimwear is required, and capacity is limited - so on those scorching summer days, you might want to arrive early to secure your spot.
ADBrooklyn Heights, Dumbo and The Bridge
A private walking tour to explore one of the most historic neighborhoods of New York City – Brooklyn Heights with Dumbo and the Brooklyn Bridge. During the Tour, we will enjoy unparalleled views over the Manhattan Skyline and the New York Bay right from the Brooklyn Promenade Park.
Beyond the Pool
Just west of the main park, you'll discover the Tiffany Street Pier, which predates the park itself and offers additional waterfront access. The pier was cleverly rebuilt in 1995 using material made from 1.5 million recycled plastic bottles - a nice environmental touch. It's become a favorite spot for fishing enthusiasts or anyone wanting to gaze out over the water.
The park includes clean, well-maintained restrooms and plenty of recreational spaces including basketball courts, handball courts, and a volleyball court. Scattered picnic tables make this an ideal spot for a casual outdoor meal with family or friends.
Get Active or Just Relax
The park offers options for both active recreation and relaxation. The waterfront location is fantastic for kayaking and canoeing, while designated fishing areas let you try your luck with a line and hook.
Kids will enjoy the playground with its swings, slides, and climbing equipment, although it can get busy during peak times. On hot days, the sprinkler area offers welcome relief from the heat. There's also a spacious open field that's ideal for flying kites or impromptu games of frisbee or catch.
A Community Gathering Place
The park has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. You'll find barbecue grills in designated areas for those weekend cookouts, and the park's somewhat secluded location actually adds to its peaceful vibe.
Dog owners will appreciate that their four-legged friends are welcome, but they need to stay on leash. The park's consistent cleanliness and maintenance help create a welcoming environment for everyone who visits. One practical tip: there aren't any stores or restaurants nearby, so you'll want to bring along whatever food, drinks, and supplies you might need for your visit.
