About Canal Park
A Piece of History
Found in Lower Manhattan, Canal Park is a charming triangular green space where Canal Street meets West and Washington Streets. This modest urban oasis carries quite the backstory, stretching all the way to the 17th century.
As you might guess, the park gets its name from an actual canal that once flowed through the area before being filled in to create what we now know as Canal Street. First designated as public land back in 1686, this little triangle has worn many hats over the centuries.
Through the Years
In the early 1800s, the space bustled with activity as the Clinton Country Market, where locals would gather to purchase goods. The park got a makeover in 1888 courtesy of renowned landscape architects Calvert Vaux and Samuel Parsons Jr., who added a distinctive central walkway that defined the space.
Interestingly, Canal Park played a role in New York's infrastructure history when it hosted the Holland Tunnel groundbreaking ceremony in 1920. After that, practical needs trumped recreation - the space was used for tunnel construction and then spent much of the 20th century as a rather uninspiring parking lot.
ADBrooklyn Seltzer Museum, Factory Tour and Tasting
Begin an 80-minute visit at the museum, exploring century-old machinery, vintage glass bottles, engaging exhibits, and a digital scavenger hunt. Tour the factory to see how a modern seltzer business operates using 100-year-old equipment, and enjoy the chance to spray loved ones with seltzer.
Back to Green
Fast forward to 2000, when determined community members rallied to reclaim this forgotten corner as the public space it was meant to be. Their efforts paid off when Canal Park reopened in 2005, thoughtfully designed to honor its 1888 layout while feeling fresh and relevant for today's New Yorkers.
Now you'll find lush lawns, seasonal flowers, and charming cobblestone-lined tree planting areas. It's a pocket of calm in the otherwise bustling streets of Lower Manhattan - fantastic for a quick breather during a hectic day.
What You'll Find
The park features well-kept landscaping and inviting grassy patches. Several benches offer a fantastic perch to rest your feet and take in the architectural tapestry of the surrounding cityscape.
Sitting adjacent to the greenway, Canal Park provides a quiet alternative to the constant flow of traffic on West Street. During warmer months, the recently added sprinkle area offers a refreshing spot to cool down - a particularly welcome feature for families with young children.
Things to Do
Despite its compact footprint, there's still room for simple pleasures here. Bird enthusiasts might spot several urban species that frequent the park throughout the year.
The open field provides just enough space for casual play, where kids can toss a ball around without much fuss. And if you're exploring the city with your four-legged friend, you'll appreciate the dog-friendly section, making Canal Park a convenient pit stop during neighborhood walks.
