About DeSalvio Playground

A Piece of Little Italy History

Located in the corner of Spring and Mulberry Streets in Nolita, DeSalvio Playground carries a rich heritage that runs deep in Manhattan's Italian-American story. The park honors John DeSalvio (1881-1948) and his son Louis DeSalvio (1910-2004), two influential figures who left their mark on the neighborhood and city politics.

The city acquired this little pocket of green in 1954, and by December 15, 1955, it had transformed into the official DeSalvio Playground. Since then, it's been representing a much-needed breather from Manhattan's non-stop energy - a place where the community comes together amid the urban hustle.

Thoughtful Design with Cultural Flair

One of the first things you'll notice is the playground's color scheme - red, white, and green modular equipment that gives a thoughtful nod to the Italian flag. It's a small but meaningful touch that connects the space to the neighborhood's cultural roots.

While not the largest park you can find in NYC, DeSalvio makes clever use of its compact footprint. The fully fenced perimeter gives parents peace of mind while kids explore and play their hearts out.

Modern Amenities in a Historic Setting

Recent renovations have brought this nearby retreat up to date without losing its character. The playground now features modern play structures that work for kids of various ages, with slides and climbing fixtures that invite adventure. During those sticky summer months, the splash pad becomes the star attraction - excellent for cooling off when the city heats up.

You'll discover a thoughtful balance between energetic play zones and quieter spots for when you need to catch your breath. Water fountains are conveniently placed throughout, so you can stay hydrated or fill up water bottles before continuing your day in the neighborhood.

Getting Active

The basketball court adds a sporty dimension to the park, excellent for a quick pickup game or shooting some hoops solo. While the playground equipment tends to attract older children, little ones can still enjoy themselves with a bit of supervision.

Take a Load Off

After exploring the surrounding streets, the park's shaded benches offer welcome respite. These scattered seating areas make DeSalvio an ideal spot to people-watch, read a book, or simply enjoy a moment of calm.

Fancy a game of chess? Two chess tables stand ready for strategic battles, although they're just as popular as impromptu picnic spots. With plenty of places to sit, this little playground provides an unexpected oasis of tranquility in one of Manhattan's most vibrant neighborhoods.
