About Devoe Park

A Peek into the Past

Devoe Park carries the name of the Devoe family, who descended from Daniel Turnier, the ambitious soul who snagged the lower section of the Fordham Patent back in 1676. The Devoes were regular churchgoers at the First Reformed Dutch Church, built in 1705 right where you're standing when you visit the park today.

Where to Find It & What It Looks Like

Located between West Fordham Road and Sedgwick Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood of the Bronx, this park offers both relaxing green space and play areas for locals. The design feels intentionally natural, with winding paths, curved entrances, and stairs that seem to flow with the landscape rather than cut through it.

The park features nice greenery - lawns, trees, bushes, and a variety of plants throughout the landscape. In spring, thousands of tulip bulbs bloom, adding color to your walks through the park. It's a quiet escape with some surprisingly good views of Manhattan and different parts of the Bronx.

Ecology enthusiasts will appreciate the pollinator garden tended by dedicated community volunteers - a small but mighty contribution to urban biodiversity. On clear days, look up to catch a glimpse of the nearby Catholic Church, whose grand architecture creates a striking contrast against the natural setting of the park.

Places to Play

No matter if you're eight or eighty, there's something here for you. The park houses two playgrounds at opposite ends - a cozier one on the west side and a more expansive one to the east - giving kids plenty of space to burn off energy.

Sports more your thing? The basketball courts feature four hoops where pickup games regularly unfold, while the baseball field hosts everything from casual tosses to more organized play. The open grassy spaces work perfectly for impromptu frisbee games, picnic spreads, or just lying back and cloud-watching under the shade of an old tree.

For the Four-Legged Friends

Since 2019, dog owners have been thrilled with the addition of a dedicated dog run - a secure, enclosed space where pups can socialize and stretch their legs. The thoughtful design includes separate areas for small and large dogs (because nobody wants their Chihuahua playing tackle with a Great Dane), plus yard hydrants to keep furry friends hydrated.

You'll discover these dog areas on the western side of the park, featuring sand surfaces that are gentle on paws. They've quickly become social hubs for local dog parents, offering a safe spot for off-leash play and canine connections.

A Neighborhood Hub

The park is popular with University Heights residents. Its green spaces and recreational options attract a diverse crowd, from families with young children to teens playing basketball and seniors relaxing in the shade.

The energy shifts throughout the week - weekday evenings and weekends bring a bustling, vibrant atmosphere as neighbors gather after work and school. Early mornings offer a more peaceful experience, well-suited for joggers looking to get their miles in before the day begins.

The Practical Stuff

Yes, there are restrooms, but like most city park facilities, cleanliness can vary from day to day. Benches are plentiful throughout, offering spots to rest, read, or people-watch.

Looking to host a small gathering? The picnic areas scattered across the park (many blessed with good shade) can accommodate several groups at once. You'll discover families celebrating birthdays, friends sharing weekend meals, and neighbors simply enjoying the outdoor space together on nice days.
