About Duane Park
A Slice of New York History
Nestled at the corner of Duane and Hudson Streets sits Duane Park - the second oldest public park in New York City, with only Bowling Green predating it. Back in 1797, the city purchased this land from Trinity Church for just five dollars, making it the first property ever acquired by the city specifically to create a public park.
The park bears the name of James Duane, who served as New York's first mayor after the Revolutionary War. He wasn't just a mayor though - Duane wore many hats as a Revolutionary War figure, constitutional convention delegate, and United States District Court judge. If you're a history buff, check out the plaque commemorating early settlers to New Amsterdam - it's like a little window into New York's colonial days.
From Then to Now
Duane Park has seen quite a few makeovers over the centuries. In the early 1800s, it was a proper formal garden with triangular and circular beds, decorated with trees and surrounded by an iron fence.
As the neighborhood evolved, so did the park. It transformed to meet the needs of workers from the nearby butter and egg district in the mid-20th century and has now settled into its role as a green haven for Tribeca residents.
Today, you'll discover a simple but elegant design featuring a ribbon of benches great for sitting and people-watching, the cooling shade of mature London plane trees, and two planting beds bursting with greenery. Its triangular shape creates a cozy pocket of nature that somehow feels separate from the surrounding urban buzz.
A Tiny Urban Oasis
Don't let its modest size fool you - this little park packs a punch when it comes to providing urban respite. Couples often pause here for a quiet moment away from the crowds, and dog owners frequently stop by during their daily walks.
You'll regularly spot locals and nearby office workers taking their lunch breaks here, stealing a few minutes of tranquility in the middle of a hectic day. There's something special about sitting in Duane Park - a chance to take a deep breath and watch Tribeca life unfold around you.
