About Ferry Point Park
Location and Overview
Located in the Bronx, Ferry Point Park sprawls across 413.8 acres of green space on a peninsula that juts into the East River. This urban space offers views of the Manhattan skyline, Long Island Sound, and the Whitestone and Throgs Neck Bridges.
The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and Hutchinson River Parkway cut through the park, naturally dividing it into eastern and western sections, each with its own distinct character.
Western Section Amenities
The western portion is where the action happens, with expansive fields meant for soccer matches, cricket games, and football scrimmages. Meandering walking paths connect these open spaces, with plenty of spots to stop for a picnic or fire up the grill.
You'll find several BBQ grills and picnic tables throughout this area - just remember it's first-come, first-served. These spots fill up quickly on weekends when families gather for cookouts and celebrations.
If you're into fishing, the shoreline offers prime spots to cast a line. And when the breeze picks up, the wide-open fields become an ideal place to fly kites against the backdrop of the city.
Eastern Section Highlights
The eastern side houses the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point, an 18-hole public golf course with Jack Nicklaus's design stamp. Next to the fairways sits a 9.5-acre community park complete with a junior baseball field, basketball courts, and a children's play area where little ones can burn off energy.
Recreation and Visitor Information
The park's extensive network of paved walking paths invites you to jog, stroll, or bike while soaking in the scenery. These paths connect to a waterfront promenade with excellent views of the city skyline.
Clean public restrooms are available around the park, but they tend to close early in the evening - something to keep in mind if you're planning to stay until sunset.
Getting here is hassle-free with free parking in a dedicated lot. For an alternative approach, you can take the NYC Ferry service - the Soundview Route costs $4 from Manhattan.
Natural Features
A lake sits within the park boundaries, providing a nice circuit for walks. The park's tidal wetlands support local wildlife and add ecological value to this urban green space.
Fall brings reds and golds to the park, making autumn a particularly good time to visit. The natural areas provide a welcome respite from city life, but it's worth bringing bug spray during summer months - the mosquitoes can be particularly enthusiastic at dusk.
History
The story of Ferry Point Park began in 1937 when New York City acquired the land while preparing to build the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. Over the decades, the park has evolved significantly, with landfill areas being reclaimed and transformed into the recreational spaces we enjoy today.
