About Fort Washington Park

Location and Overview

Found in the Washington Heights area of Upper Manhattan, Fort Washington Park spans 160 acres along the Hudson River from West 155th Street to Dyckman Street. The park provides a welcome retreat from the city with its dramatic cliffs, peaceful meadows, and serene wooded areas.

What we really appreciate here are the panoramic views of the Hudson River, the New Jersey Palisades, and the iconic George Washington Bridge. The sunsets over the river are particularly impressive - even locals often pause to take in the view.

Historical Significance

The park carries a piece of American history in its name. It's named after Fort Washington, a Revolutionary War fortification that was crucial during America's early days.

While the original fort stood slightly east of today's park, you can visit the American Redoubt Monument within the park boundaries, which marks the western edge of the historic fortification. This is a subtle but meaningful connection to the area's revolutionary past.

Notable Landmarks

A highlight of Fort Washington Park is the Little Red Lighthouse, officially called Jeffrey's Hook Light. Built in 1880 and relocated here in 1921, this small but mighty lighthouse became famous through the treasured children's book, "The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge," published in 1942.

Today, it stands beneath the massive George Washington Bridge - a little piece of maritime history that many New Yorkers and visitors find endearing. It's particularly enchanting for families with kids who've read the famous story.

Recreational Facilities

The park offers numerous recreational options. Sports enthusiasts can take advantage of tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, volleyball courts, and a soccer field - all with stunning views of the George Washington Bridge as your backdrop.

Kids can burn off energy at the well-maintained playground, while the open grassy areas are well-suited for impromptu frisbee games, picnics, or just lounging with a good book. The clean barbecue areas are a weekend hotspot, but you'll want to arrive early to claim one during summer months.

Trails and Pathways

The Hudson River Greenway cuts through the park as part of the larger Manhattan Waterfront Greenway, offering a continuous path for cyclists and walkers along Manhattan's western edge.

You'll come across two main paths here - one hugging the waterfront and another running near the train tracks. Both are well-paved and excellent for a morning jog or leisurely stroll. Just keep an eye out for speedy cyclists, especially on weekends when the paths get busier.

Dog-Friendly Areas

Four-legged friends are welcome at Fort Washington Park, with plenty of grassy spaces for walks and play. The open areas are well-suited for dogs to stretch their legs, but they should stay leashed. Remember to bring bags to clean up after your pup.

The maintenance team does a good job keeping the grounds clean, but holiday weekends can sometimes leave the park a bit messier than usual until crews catch up.

Amenities and Accessibility

When nature calls, you'll discover restroom facilities near the lighthouse and tennis courts. For picnics, there are scattered picnic tables throughout, but many visitors simply bring blankets to spread on the grass.

A word of caution: parts of this park require navigating steep stairs or slopes, which can be challenging if you have mobility issues. The park's natural topography means some of its most beautiful viewpoints require a bit of climbing.

Best Times to Visit

One of the best things about Fort Washington Park is how uncrowded it feels compared to many Manhattan green spaces. Even on beautiful weekend days, you can usually find a peaceful spot to yourself, especially in the mornings.

It's best to plan your visit during daylight hours since the park's size and varying terrain can make it tricky to navigate after dark. If possible, time your visit for that golden hour before sunset - when the light hits the Hudson just right, the view is quite spectacular.
