About Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park
Waterfront Transformation
Set in Long Island City, Queens, Hunter's Point South Waterfront Park stretches across 11 acres along the East River. The views of the Manhattan skyline from here are nothing short of magical, especially when the sun starts to set.
This park has quite the backstory. What was once an abandoned post-industrial area has blossomed into this vibrant public space, opening in phases (first in 2013, then in 2018). It's now an urban green space where you can catch your breath, play, or simply reconnect with nature amid the city hustle.
Park Features
The layout here offers something for everyone. There's a central green space that works perfectly as a community hub - you'll spot people lounging with picnics, tossing frisbees, or just gathering with friends.
One notable feature is the 30-foot-high cantilevered platform that juts out over the water. We've spent many moments here taking in the panoramic views of Manhattan and the East River. This spot has become quite popular on Instagram.
If you're bringing kids along, there are multiple playgrounds scattered across the park. The water features are particularly useful during those sweltering summer days. For the more active visitors, there's a basketball court, soccer field, and even a beach volleyball pit to get your game on.
ADBridges of New York: Professional Photoshoot
During this magical private photoshoot session, you will have your memories captured at two of the most famous bridges- Brooklyn & Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge, as one of the primary symbols of New York City, offers the ultimate opportunity to immerse yourself in the city and provides a unique view of both boroughs.
Environmental Design
What makes this park special goes beyond what meets the eye. The designers incorporated 1.5 acres of newly established wetlands that do double duty - they're beautiful to look at and provide natural flood protection.
The entire park was built with resilience in mind. You'll notice native, salt-tolerant plants throughout that can handle the occasional splash of brackish river water. It's smart design at work.
The restored wetlands are ecological powerhouses - they serve as nurseries for local wildlife, filter polluted water, and act as natural buffers during storms by absorbing excess water when the weather turns extreme.
Historical Elements & Art
We love how the park honors its industrial roots. Walk through the interpretive rail garden where preserved rail tracks peek through native grasses, offering a quiet nod to the site's former life.
Art lovers will appreciate the two permanent installations here. At night, "Luminescence" by Nobuho Nagasawa comes alive - seven sculptures representing moon phases that glow after dark. There's also the playful "Tether Ball Monument" by Karyn Olivier that puts a artistic spin on the classic playground game.
Recreation & Amenities
If you're a dog parent or just love watching pups play, the dog run here is top-notch with thoughtfully separated areas for small and large dogs.
You'll discover clean public restrooms near the ferry station and food areas - always a practical necessity for longer visits. Water fountains are conveniently placed throughout as well.
During warmer months, food trucks and outdoor cafés provide options to eat while enjoying the views. There's abundant seating too - benches and tables positioned perfectly to maximize comfort and the amazing vistas.
Transportation & Access
Getting here is a breeze. You can take the NYC Ferry to Hunter's Point South for a particularly scenic approach that offers bonus water views before you even arrive.
If you prefer subways, the 7 line stops within walking distance of the park. The gates are open daily from 6 AM to 10 PM year-round, so you can experience the park's changing beauty across all seasons.
What started as part of a larger development project is now an established park space in the neighborhood where people come to play, unwind, and connect with nature while still being in New York City.
