About Kimlau Square

A Piece of History in Chinatown

Tucked away at the bustling intersection of Oliver Street, East Broadway, the Bowery, and Park Row sits Kimlau Square - a modest yet meaningful plaza in the heart of Manhattan's Chinatown. This little urban space is at the center of the larger Chatham Square area, with significant historical importance despite its small footprint.

Named after Second Lieutenant Benjamin Ralph Kimlau, this square honors a local hero - a Chinese American bomber pilot who gave his life during World War II at just 26 years old. In 1961, city officials officially designated this corner of Chatham Square as Kimlau Square, creating a lasting tribute to Lt. Kimlau and fellow Chinese American veterans who served their country.

Monuments with Meaning

The most notable feature here is the Kimlau War Memorial, an impressive 18-foot granite arch that's immediately visible as you approach the square. Built in 1962 and designed by architect Poy Gum Lee, this ceremonial gateway beautifully marries traditional Chinese architectural elements with mid-century modern sensibilities. Take a moment to read the bilingual inscriptions - in both English and Chinese - honoring Americans of Chinese ancestry who died defending freedom and democracy.

You'll also find a statue of Lin Zexu standing proudly within the square. This 19th century Qing dynasty official played a pivotal role in events leading to the First Opium War, adding another layer of cultural significance to this compact public space.

Beyond a Square

For the local community, Kimlau Square is more than just a place to pass through. It's a gathering spot and the location for annual ceremonies honoring veterans. The square represents Chinese American patriotism and military service in a neighborhood rich with cultural heritage.

In a significant recognition of its importance, the Kimlau War Memorial received official New York City landmark status in 2021 - making it the first landmark in the entire city specifically honoring Chinese American history and contributions.

Worth a Visit

While Kimlau Square won't take long to explore, it offers a meaningful stop on any Chinatown itinerary. Take a seat on one of the benches, perhaps with a snack from a nearby shop, and soak in the historical significance surrounding you.

If you can, try visiting after sunset when the monuments are illuminated, creating a particularly atmospheric experience. Thanks to its central location, the square makes a fantastic launching point for deeper exploration of Chinatown's rich cultural landscape, renowned restaurants, and unique attractions that surround it in every direction.
