About Morningside Park
A Historic Urban Oasis
Tucked between the neighborhoods of Morningside Heights and Harlem, Morningside Park spans 30 acres of Upper Manhattan. The park stretches from West 110th to West 123rd Street, with Morningside Drive bordering its western edge and Morningside Avenue marking its eastern boundary. If you're planning a visit, the park welcomes guests daily from 6AM to 1AM.
Nature's Dramatic Stage
What stands out about this park is its remarkable terrain. A steep cliff of Manhattan schist runs through the entire length, creating a natural two-level layout. The western side sits considerably higher than the eastern portion, giving the park a distinctive character you won't find in many other NYC green spaces.

Completed in 1895, the park stands as the final collaborative masterpiece of legendary landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux - the same visionaries who brought us Central Park.
The extensive stairways connecting the upper and lower sections offer nice viewpoints over Harlem and the eastern cityscape.
Natural Beauty Around Every Corner
Winding paths meander through the park, offering a peaceful retreat from the city's constant motion. One of the park's features is its ornamental pond and waterfall, which is home to turtles and various birds.

Around the park, exposed rock outcroppings tell the geological story of Manhattan, providing both visual interest and a connection to the island's natural history.
Art and Monuments
At the triangle formed by Manhattan Avenue, Morningside Avenue, and 114th Street stands a striking bronze sculptural group installed in 1900. The work depicts General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette - both in military uniform, shaking hands - mounted on a white marble pedestal set on a gray granite base. It was created by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the sculptor behind the Statue of Liberty, and commemorates the alliance between the United States and France during the American Revolution. The piece is an exact replica of a statue that stands in the Place des États-Unis in Paris.
At the round overlook bay at Morningside Drive and West 116th Street, the Carl Schurz Monument is one of the park's most architecturally significant works. Unveiled in 1913, it pairs a bronze standing figure by sculptor Karl Bitter with a semicircular granite exedra designed by Henry Bacon - the same architect who went on to design the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The arms of the curved exedra carry relief carvings that speak to Schurz's legacy as an opponent of slavery and an advocate for the fair treatment of Native Americans.
Something for Everyone
Morningside Park offers options for both play and relaxation. Multiple playgrounds are scattered within the grounds, designed for kids of different ages. On hot summer days, the playground with sprinklers becomes a particular favorite.
If you're more sports-minded, the baseball fields and basketball courts offer plenty of space for active recreation. For those seeking tranquility, the open grassy areas are good spots to spread out a blanket and enjoy a good book or picnic.
The designated barbecue areas are popular for family gatherings during the warmer months.
A Park Shaped by Its Community
Morningside Park has evolved significantly over the years. In the 1990s, a former construction site within the park was transformed into the ornamental pond and waterfall that now is one of its most peaceful features.
The ongoing vitality of the park owes much to local involvement, with organizations like Friends of Morningside Park dedicating time and resources to its care and enhancement.
On Saturday mornings, the southern end of the park comes alive with a farmers market where you can pick up fresh produce and local goods while connecting with neighbors.
With its proximity to Columbia University, the park naturally attracts students and faculty seeking a green respite from campus life. It's also a popular gathering space for the surrounding communities.
