About Morris Mesa Playground
History
Next to the Cross Bronx Expressway between Morris Avenue and the Grand Concourse, Morris Mesa is a pocket-sized green space in the heart of the Bronx. It's one of 44 park parcels that came into existence when the New York City Department of Parks acquired land during the construction of the Cross-Bronx Expressway back in the mid-20th century.
Name Origin
Wondering about the name? It pays homage to the Morris family, colonial landowners who once held vast tracts across the Bronx. The "Mesa" part refers to the park's distinctive raised, flat terrain that sets it apart from the surrounding landscape.
Features
At just 1.5 acres, Morris Mesa Playground might be small, but it offers a welcome breath of green for nearby residents seeking respite from the concrete jungle.
The park primarily features paved areas interspersed with grassy sections. Keep in mind that its location right next to the bustling Cross Bronx Expressway means you'll likely hear the steady hum of traffic during your visit.
This neighborhood space offers limited amenities, representing a simple urban oasis rather than a destination park with extensive facilities.
