About the Location

A Green Urban Retreat

Situated in Birmingham's Glen Iris neighborhood, Bessie Estell Park spans a refreshing 5.2 acres of green space. You can find this urban oasis right next to EPIC Elementary School, facing 8th Street South across from St Elias Maronite Catholic Church, just south of I-65.

The park's design features several circular landscaped plazas that create perfect pockets for unwinding and soaking in some nature. With its abundant vegetation, it's a peaceful escape from the city hustle without having to leave town. At the heart of the park sits an unfenced youth soccer field - a simple, open space that's meant for impromptu games or just running around freely.

Everyone's Welcome Here

Named after Bessie Estell, a dedicated educator and two-term Birmingham City Council member, this park was thoughtfully designed with inclusion in mind. The entire space is wheelchair accessible, ensuring everyone can enjoy what the park has to offer.

Scattered across the grounds are picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch or casual snack. There are also men's and women's restrooms, however keep in mind their availability might vary depending on when you visit.

The park got a nice upgrade in 2014 when the City of Birmingham invested in playground improvements. Even better, in 2018, additional funding came through the National Recreation and Park Association's "Meet Me at the Park" program. With matching city funds, the park added specialized play equipment designed specifically for children with developmental and other disabilities.

Community at Heart

Over the years, the park has become woven into the fabric of local community life. In December 2010, the Jefferson County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority planted a Bald cypress tree as a memorial to Bessie Estell and fellow alumna Dorothy Height - a living tribute that continues to grow with the park.

A UAB Community Garden found its home near the park in 2013, adding to the neighborhood's green initiatives. The park has become part of many families' routines, with some making it a regular stop before or after services at the church across the street.

Something for Everyone

If you're looking to play or just relax, Bessie Estell Park has options for both. The playground is a hit with families, offering fun spaces for kids of different ages and abilities. Walking paths wind through the grounds, fantastic for walking your dog or getting in some light exercise.

The park even steps into the spotlight occasionally for special events. In July 2022, it hosted the boules sports competition during the 2022 World Games, bringing an international flair to this neighborhood space.
