About the Location
Location and Overview
Found in Tarrant, a cozy suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, you can find Chief William C. "Billy" Hewitt Park. Opened in 2006, this peaceful city park sits just off Pinson Valley Parkway, hugging the shores of Five Mile Creek.
What makes this park special is its surprisingly serene atmosphere - a little pocket of nature amid the urban landscape. It's clean, quiet, and part of the broader Red Rock Trail System, connecting you to other beautiful trails throughout Birmingham.
Recreational Activities
Whether you're looking to break a sweat or just enjoy some fresh air, there's plenty of green space and paths for all fitness levels.
The paved walking track is definitely the star attraction here. The main loop measures exactly half-mile, making it super convenient to track your distance as you get your steps in.
Feeling more ambitious? Cross the bridge to access an additional two-mile trail (or four miles round trip) that extends beyond the park boundaries along the Red Rock Trail System. It's great for those days when you want to push yourself a bit further.
Playground and Children's Activities
If you've got little ones in tow, they'll love the playground area designed with smaller children in mind. It's a safe space where kids can climb, slide, and burn off some of that endless energy.
The playground's thoughtful placement near a large pavilion means you can relax in the shade while keeping an eye on your kids as they play - a setup that parents will definitely appreciate.
Amenities
Planning an event? The park's main pavilion can be rented for gatherings. It'll cost you $75.00 for 4 hours or $150.00 for a full day - pretty reasonable for a picturesque outdoor venue.
Beyond the main pavilion, you can find several smaller covered areas dotted around the park. These shaded spots come equipped with multiple tables, making them great for birthday celebrations or casual family get-togethers.
There are plenty of benches strategically placed along the walking paths for when you need a breather. And if you're just looking for a spontaneous picnic spot, you can use one of the tables without having to rent a pavilion.
Near the entrance, you'll find a building housing restroom facilities, however do note that their availability might vary depending on when you visit.
Accessibility
One of the nicest things about this park is its mostly level terrain and paved paths. This makes it particularly welcoming if you're just starting a walking routine or if you use a wheelchair or mobility aid.
Just watch your step in a few spots - there are some uneven sections in the pavement that might catch you off guard if you're not paying attention.
Community Value
As part of Tarrant's city park system, Chief William C. "Billy" Hewitt Park has become a cherished community resource. Its position along Five Mile Creek offers some lovely views, giving you that refreshing connection to nature without having to leave the city.
Locals come here to escape the daily grind, get some exercise, or simply enjoy a peaceful outdoor meal. In spring and summer, wildflowers pop up alongside the track, adding splashes of color to this tranquil community space.
