About the Location
A Piece of Anchorage History
Situated in the O'Malley/Huffman neighborhood of Anchorage, Bob & Arlene Cross Park has been a community gathering spot longer than it's had its current name. Back in the day, three Quonset huts stood here, acting as the social heart of the Huffman, Birch, and O'Malley Road areas.
It wasn't until 1995 that this beloved community space officially became a park. The Parks & Recreation Department added play equipment and birdhouses in 2003, giving the space more character. In 2006, the park was renamed to honor the Cross Family for their significant contributions to the community - people who clearly left their mark on Anchorage.
What You Can Do Here
If you're looking to burn some energy or just enjoy the outdoors, there are several options available. Horse enthusiasts will appreciate the horse-riding ring, while sports fans can make use of the sports field. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, the hiking/biking trail offers an ideal opportunity to stretch your legs and breathe in that fresh Alaska air.
Got kids? The play equipment provides a space for the little ones to climb, swing, and slide to their hearts' content. The open areas are well-suited for impromptu picnics or just lounging around on a sunny day.
Getting Around
One of the thoughtful aspects of Bob & Arlene Cross Park is its accessibility. Wheelchair-friendly paths make navigation easier for everyone, and there's plenty of parking available so you won't have to circle around looking for a spot.
Natural Encounters
For those who enjoy a bit of wildlife watching, the park's wildlife trail offers good opportunities. It's a chance to step away from the urban hustle and maybe spot some local critters going about their day. This natural element adds an educational dimension to your visit - a little bit of wilderness education right in the city.
