About the Location
A Hill of Hidden Treasures
Located in Chandler, Paseo Vista Recreation Area is something of a marvel - an 80-acre recreational haven built atop what was once a city landfill. Connected to the Paseo Trail and Consolidated Canal, this park has undergone quite a transformation. What was once considered the neighborhood eyesore is now a community space with rolling hills, boulder-lined slopes, wildflowers, and native plants.
Take Aim at the Archery Range
The archery range here is perfect if you've ever wanted to try your hand at archery. With 25 lanes stretching out to 90 meters, 5 lanes to 60 meters, and 4 lanes to 30 meters - all with fixed target bales - there's plenty of space to perfect your shot.
The range includes a generous outdoor classroom area for learning the ropes. An especially great feature is the covered seating area with tables near the range, plus actual restrooms with running water (a luxury at outdoor facilities!). Regular archers might want to bring their own target bales, although public ones are available.
Disc Golf with a View
The disc golf course here takes full advantage of the park's undulating terrain, creating a uniquely challenging experience. Regardless of whether you're just starting out or working on your technique, you'll appreciate having both beginner and intermediate tee pads to choose from.
The elevated course offers some pretty spectacular views of the surrounding area. It's not a professional-level course by any means, but the interesting layout and varied terrain make for a fun casual round.
Playgrounds That Spark Imagination
The playground areas here go beyond your standard swings and slides. Kids up to about 12 years old will love exploring the double-decker structures, scaling the giant web climbing apparatus, conquering the rock wall, or playing make-believe in the "jail." There's even a tractor for little farmers to climb on!
A cool eco-friendly touch: some of the walls are made from recycled tires. Just be aware that there are plenty of loose rocks around that tend to become impromptu toys for curious little ones.
Dog-Friendly Paradise
If you've got a four-legged friend who needs room to run, you'll be happy to discover the spacious fenced dog park areas. With two large separate enclosures, there's plenty of space for pups to burn off energy and make some canine friends.
The dog park has developed something of a community feel, with regulars who come at certain times. It's well-maintained and offers enough room for even the most energetic dogs to sprint to their heart's content.
Trails with a Perspective
Over a mile of walking trails wind through the park, connecting to the broader Paseo Trail system along the canal. If you're looking for a gentle stroll or a more vigorous workout, these paths provide a perfect escape into nature without leaving the city.
The park's elevated position - you are walking on a former landfill, after all - offers nice sunset views across the valley. It's worth timing your visit for golden hour just to experience this.
Comfort in the Details
Thoughtful amenities make Paseo Vista a place where you can comfortably spend several hours. Shaded pavilions and picnic areas dot the landscape, some even featuring electrical outlets - excellent for powering a small cooler or charging your phone during a family gathering.
The restroom facilities are clean and well-maintained with proper plumbing (no porta-potties here!), and there's ample parking to accommodate visitors.
Before You Go
Here's a tip: don't judge this park from street level! You need to make your way up to the top of the hill to really see all it has to offer. The main entrance is on McQueen Road, however your GPS might try to send you elsewhere.
You might notice small planes overhead occasionally, as the park isn't far from the local airport. It's rarely disruptive, but something to be aware of if you're seeking complete silence.
If you're feeling especially adventurous, bring a bike or comfortable walking shoes and extend your outdoor time by exploring the Chandler Paseo Trail that connects directly to the park and follows the canal for miles.
