About Monterey Park
Features and Amenities
Found in Mesa, Arizona, Monterey Park spans 21 acres of public recreational space with activities for all ages. Whether you're looking to let the kids burn off some energy or enjoy a peaceful afternoon outdoors, this local park has plenty of options.
The park features a newly installed playground that comes fully shaded and well-lit - particularly helpful in the scorching Arizona sun. No more worrying about sunburns or trying to pry the kids away before dusk falls. The playground is thoughtfully designed with an obstacle course, plenty of swings, and separate areas where both older and younger children can play safely at their own pace.
Playground Details
If you've got kids in tow, the playground is where you'll likely spend most of your time. That extensive shade covering is an absolute lifesaver during those hot summer days.
The little ones will be thrilled with the interactive playground equipment including a rather unique exploration area in sand where they can channel their inner paleontologist by uncovering and identifying various fossils. There's a big climbing structure that keeps older kids challenged and entertained, while smaller slides and climbing equipment cater perfectly to the younger adventurers.
Sports Facilities
Sports enthusiasts won't be disappointed with the variety of options here. The park houses multiple baseball fields, basketball courts, and volleyball courts for pickup games or organized play. The Cubs Fields at Monterey Park, presented by the Mesa Hohokams, include Ryne Sandberg Field (Field #1) - a quality space for more formal sports activities.
Pickleball players, rejoice! The park's four newer courts have become quite the hit with locals. You can even reserve them online to ensure you get your game time in.
Dog-Friendly Areas
Four-legged family members haven't been forgotten at Monterey Park. The spacious fenced dog park provides plenty of room for dogs to run, play, and make new furry friends off-leash in a secure environment.
Throughout the rest of the park, leashed dogs are welcome to join you on your adventures. You'll come across dog waste stations along the walking paths, however they could be a bit more frequent - so you may want to bring an extra bag or two just in case.
Natural Highlights
Nature buffs might be surprised to learn that the park houses what's been measured as the largest Sweet Acacia in Arizona on record. This impressive specimen earned a 'Magnificent Tree' designation in December 2022 as part of Arizona's Magnificent Trees Program - a pretty cool bragging right for a neighborhood park.
Additional Amenities
If you're looking to get your steps in, the walking path that loops around the entire park offers a pleasant route for a morning jog or evening stroll. You'll often spot locals walking their dogs or getting some exercise here.
Bookworms will appreciate the Mesa Express Library located right in the park. This innovative self-service facility uses Expanded Access technology, letting you enter using your library barcode and PIN. You can request books online and pick them up from lockers outside, with a librarian available on Wednesdays if you need assistance.
Planning a gathering? The park offers several covered ramadas and picnic areas that you can reserve ahead of time. Most are conveniently located near the playground - ideal for birthday parties or family get-togethers where the kids can play while adults chat.
Facilities
When nature calls, restrooms are available inside the library during operating hours. That said, having additional facilities closer to the playground would be a welcome improvement - especially for families with young children.
Parking is generally plentiful with a dedicated lot, however you might need to resort to street parking during busy weekends or special events. Water fountains are scattered around the grounds to keep you hydrated, and there are even electrical outlets available if your phone needs a charge after taking too many photos of the kids having fun.
