About the Location
Stepping Back in Time
Positioned in Mesa, the Park of Canals preserves roughly 4,500 feet of ancient waterways that date all the way back to 300 B.C. These aren't just any old ditches - they're remnants of an impressive system built by the Hohokam people who once called the Salt River Valley home. Imagine this: their complete irrigation network stretched over 500 miles, supporting between 30,000 and 60,000 people and helping cultivate up to 100,000 acres of land. Pretty remarkable for ancient technology, right?
The historical value here isn't just locally recognized. The National Geographic Society has highlighted this spot as a significant Native American heritage site. Even more impressive, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the Hohokam canal system an Award for Excellence in Prehistoric Engineering - the first ancient civil engineering project ever to receive such recognition. As you walk along these historic canal beds, informational plaques help you appreciate just how advanced these early engineers really were.
Desert Beauty on Display
Beyond the ancient waterways, you'll find the Brinton Desert Botanical Garden, a living showcase of native Arizona plants representing four different desert regions. The garden is educational as well as attractive, with labeled plants that help you identify what you're looking at as you wander the trails.
The pathways wind through collections of cacti and other desert plants typical of central Arizona, creating a serene landscape that feels worlds away from city life. If you're patient (and a bit lucky), you might spot some of the local wildlife - rabbits and quail are known to make appearances throughout the park.
More Than History
This 31-acre space is more than simply a historical site. Kids can burn off energy at the playground, complete with swings and climbing structures. For gatherings, several ramadas offer shade along with picnic tables, BBQ grills, and trash cans - fantastic for family outings or small get-togethers.
One unique feature you won't find everywhere is the Compass Course, created as part of a Boy Scout Eagle project to teach visitors about navigation using the earth's magnetic fields. And if you're into cycling, you'll appreciate that the park connects to the Southern Canal bike trail, making it easy to include in your ride.
Practical Stuff to Know
You'll come across public restrooms here that are accessible for visitors with disabilities. There are multiple parking areas, however it's worth paying attention to any posted regulations.
Dog lovers, take note - your leashed four-legged friends are welcome on the trails. Just remember to clean up after them to keep the park enjoyable for everyone.
The Park of Canals combines historical depth, natural beauty, and everyday recreation. It's a quiet spot in Mesa where you can explore ancient history, see native desert landscapes, and relax in a space with thousands of years of history.
