About the Location

Historic Origins

Established in 1921, this eight-acre park was originally intended to serve as a district athletic area for the west side of Phoenix. The park is situated in a significant location, roughly bounded by Fillmore Street, 19th Avenue, Van Buren Street, and Grand Avenue.

University Park is part of a larger historic district that maintains the setting and character of its period of historic significance, which spans from 1886 to 1938. This period encompasses the early development of Phoenix and the completion of the park's improvements.

Architectural Features

At the center of University Park, visitors will find a swimming pool accompanied by two notable buildings: a Pueblo Revival style poolhouse and an Art Moderne style pumphouse. These structures, built in the 1930s, add architectural interest to the park's landscape.

On the Van Buren Street frontage stands the Arizona Museum, another building in the Pueblo Revival style, further enhancing the park's cultural significance.

Recreational Amenities

The majority of the park's area is dedicated to baseball fields, providing ample space for sports activities. The perimeter of the park is characterized by open grassy fields dotted with palm trees, creating a pleasant green space within the urban environment.
