About University Park
A Glimpse into the Past
Situated in Phoenix is a little piece of history that's been around since 1921. University Park started as an eight-acre athletic spot for folks living on the west side of the city. You'll find it nestled between Fillmore Street, 19th Avenue, Van Buren Street, and Grand Avenue - a green oasis in the urban landscape.
The park isn't just a random patch of green; it's actually part of a historic district that preserves the vibe and character of Phoenix's early days. From 1886 to 1938, this area witnessed the city's growth from its humble beginnings through the completion of the park we see today.
Architectural Spots
At the heart of University Park sits a swimming pool flanked by two architectural treasures: a Pueblo Revival style poolhouse and an Art Moderne style pumphouse. Built in the 1930s, these buildings aren't just functional - they're like little time capsules from nearly a century ago.
If you stroll along Van Buren Street, you'll spot the Arizona Museum with its distinctive Pueblo Revival architecture, adding another layer of cultural richness to your park experience.
ADGuided 2 Hour Sunset/Night or Sunrise Hike at Piestewa Peak
This is a unique experience where you will reach excellent views of Phoenix, learn about the plants and animals of the Sonoran Desert, and get a good workout! During sunrise or sunset you will see beautiful changes in sky’s color as the sun moves below or above the horizon.
Something for Everyone
Baseball fans, rejoice! Most of the park is dedicated to baseball fields where you can play a game or just watch others enjoy America's pastime. Around the edges, you'll come across open grassy areas dotted with swaying palm trees - ideal for lounging with a book or having an impromptu picnic.
Got kids? The park includes a small playground area where little ones can burn off some energy. There are also a few picnic tables scattered throughout if you fancy an outdoor meal. Note that while public restrooms are available, they might sometimes be closed, so it's good to plan ahead.
