About the Location
Dedication and History
Situated in Rita Ranch, Tucson, Purple Heart Park spans a generous 35.8 acres of community space. Opened back in the early '90s, this park isn't just any ordinary green space - it's a tribute to the Military Order of the Purple Heart, honoring the brave men and women who were killed or injured during combat while serving in our Armed Forces.
Recreational Facilities
The park offers options whether you're sports-minded or just looking to let the kids burn off some energy. You'll find multiple baseball and softball fields, a pretty cool skate park, and a swimming pool that's open seasonally when the Arizona heat is in full force.
If you've got little ones in tow, there are several playgrounds scattered throughout with all the classics - play structures, slides, monkey bars, and swings. The playgrounds have equipment designed specifically for various stages of childhood. Some play areas even have shade covers - a real blessing during those scorching Tucson afternoons.
For the four-legged family members, Ivan's Spot Dog Park is a fenced area dedicated to Police K-9 Ivan, who lost his life in the line of duty. The space is thoughtfully divided into two sections - one for the big dogs and another for the smaller pups - complete with water fountains so your furry friends can stay hydrated.
Community Hub
Beyond just recreation, this park hosts many local gatherings. Each year, Christ Lutheran Vail church hosts their "Worship in the Park" event here, and the fields regularly buzz with the excitement of local baseball and softball leagues.
With its interconnected walking paths, open grassy areas, and sheltered spaces, the park works equally well whether you're looking for active recreation or just a peaceful spot to unwind. The park is well-maintained compared to other public parks in Tucson.
Memorials
True to its name, Purple Heart Park features several touching tributes to Purple Heart recipients. Near the entrance, you'll come across a memorial bench featuring a poignant quote from poet Thomas Moore.
As you explore further, keep an eye out for the tile mosaic bearing the phrase "All gave some, some gave all," along with various smaller memorials scattered within the grounds, each honoring veterans and Purple Heart recipients.
Purple Heart Pool
On the northwest end of the park sits Purple Heart Pool, a summer haven that offers various aquatic programs, including competitive swim teams for the more serious swimmers. Admission is free, but hours do change with the seasons.
The pool area includes some grassy space and shade structures where you can catch your breath between dips.
Splash Pad
For a more casual water experience, the park's splash pad operates from dawn to dusk during warmer months. It's popular with younger children, offering a way to cool off without the depth of a pool. On hot days, you'll find plenty of gleeful kiddos running through the sprays.
Skate Park
Skaters, take note: Purple Heart Skate Park features an 8,000-square-foot in-ground design with ramps and a small bowl. It's considered one of Tucson's better skate parks, and works well for beginners who are just starting out.
Amenities
Practical needs haven't been forgotten. You can find restroom facilities conveniently located around the grounds, with sets at both the front and back of the park.
Planning a gathering? Several picnic areas with cement tables are available, including covered pavilions that you can reserve for events. There are charcoal grills ready for public use, making this spot great for family barbecues or weekend cookouts with friends.
Staying hydrated is easy with multiple water fountains available for both you and your dogs. And when it comes to parking, there's plenty of it - though fair warning, it can fill up quickly during events and on busy weekends, so you might want to arrive early.
