About the Location

Natural Features

Tucked away in Antioch, California, Contra Loma Regional Park spans a refreshing 780 acres of open space. At its heart lies an 80-acre reservoir, creating a stunning centerpiece that's ideal for year-round fishing and home to a lifeguarded swim lagoon that comes alive during the summer months.

The landscape here is beautifully diverse - rolling hills stretch out before you, vegetation grows lush and inviting, and the views? Simply breathtaking. Whether you're hiking, biking, or just soaking in nature, the scenery is quite impressive. The trail system is particularly special, connecting to the broader Delta de Anza Trail that winds an impressive 15+ miles from Oakley all the way to Concord.

Wildlife and Natural Setting

The park offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Keep your eyes peeled for bouncing jackrabbits, sun-bathing turtles, and a variety of feathered friends including the distinctive Black Phoebe. Spring brings dramatic changes - hillsides become lush with greenery and wildflowers spread across the landscape. You'll also spot cattle grazing peacefully in designated areas of the park.

A word of caution for the warmer months: rattlesnakes do call this park home. They're most active during midday hours (12-4 PM) and typically avoid main trails, but it's good to stay alert while you're exploring the more remote sections.

Recreation Opportunities

The swim lagoon is a popular attraction during summer. Complete with a sandy beach, changing facilities, and a spot to grab refreshments, it's an excellent place to cool off. Lifeguards keep watch during summer months, and there's even an accessible pool lift available for those with mobility challenges.

Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the reservoir's diverse aquatic residents: catfish, black and striped bass, bluegill, trout, and red-eared sunfish all swim these waters. Rainbow trout are stocked regularly, making this a particularly exciting spot for trout fishing. Just remember you'll need a Daily District Fishing Permit, available at the entry kiosk.

The park's numerous picnic areas offer shady retreats with tables and BBQ grills - great for relaxing with a meal while taking in the serene surroundings. Many can be reserved for group gatherings, so you can plan ahead for special occasions.

Trails and Activities

Hikers of all abilities will find something to love at Contra Loma. For an easy, scenic walk, try the flat loop trail around the reservoir - it stretches about 3.25 miles and offers beautiful lakeside views throughout. If you're craving more of a challenge, head for the hillside trails where your efforts will be rewarded with stunning panoramic vistas.

Biking is another fantastic way to experience the park, with both paved and natural trails to explore. Dog owners will appreciate that many trails welcome four-legged companions, with convenient pet waste stations along the way. Your pup can even grab a drink at the dog-level water fountains located near the restrooms.

Facilities and Amenities

You'll discover clean restrooms across the park - standard facilities near the pool area and portable options in other locations. Staying hydrated is easy with multiple drinking water stations distributed across the grounds.

The picnic areas are particularly inviting, featuring tables, BBQ grills, and shade trees that create perfect spots for family gatherings. Larger groups should consider reservations, especially during peak times. For the more active visitors, there's even a volleyball court available for use.

Do note that entrance fees apply (typically $5 per vehicle), with possible additional charges for dogs. If you plan to visit frequently, season passes offer good value.

Historical Significance

Beyond its natural beauty, Contra Loma carries a rich historical legacy. This land was once home to the Julpun people, speakers of the Bay Miwok language. Today, the park provides recreational space for visitors while protecting habitat for local wildlife and serving as a wintering ground for migratory waterfowl.
