Beach Park

Location and Overview

Beach Park sprawls across about 26 acres next to the Kern River Parkway at the intersection of 24th Street and Oak Street in Bakersfield. Its gates stay open from 5AM to 10PM daily, giving you plenty of time to take it all in. Being centrally located in Bakersfield means you're probably never too far from a quick visit.

Sports Facilities

If you're into sports, Beach Park offers several options. Baseball fans can enjoy the lighted baseball field complete with proper fencing and bleacher seating - great for catching those slow-pitch softball games that run throughout the season.

Surprisingly enough, the park has 26 lighted and fenced horseshoe pits - yes, twenty-six! - where competitors regularly test their aim. Soccer and football players aren't left out either, with a lighted field available for matches, but you'll have to bring your own chairs as there aren't any bleachers here.

Recreation Areas

The skate park at Beach Park holds a special place in local hearts as Bakersfield's original skating venue. Recently upgraded with lighting, it now welcomes both vert and street-style skateboarders even after the sun goes down. It's pretty cool to watch the skaters do their thing as evening falls.

Kids have plenty of space to burn energy at the large playground featuring multiple slides and climbing structures for different age groups. While swing-lovers might be disappointed (there aren't any), the spacious playground offers enough excitement to keep little ones entertained.

Scattered within the grounds are numerous picnic areas with tables nestled under shade trees. The grilling facilities make this a no-brainer spot for weekend family cookouts or casual get-togethers with friends. A convenient one-way road loops through the entire park, making it easy to find your perfect spot.

Points of Interest

One corner of the park holds a quiet and somewhat unexpected structure: a rectangular maze that is all that remains of what was once the Cancer Survivors Park. The sculptural figures that originally accompanied the installation were stolen at some point, leaving the maze as the sole surviving piece of what was a more complete memorial. It's an unusual thing to come across in a park otherwise focused on sports and recreation, and worth a look if you're curious about the site's history.

Natural Environment

One of the park's best features is its connection to the Kern River Parkway, acting as a jumping-off point for various trails. This green connection enhances the park's appeal, offering extended adventures beyond the park boundaries.

The abundance of shade trees and open grassy areas creates a pleasant atmosphere for relaxing or playing. Keep an eye out for the park's resident ground squirrels - they're everywhere! Kids and dogs seem particularly fascinated by these little creatures darting about their business.

Amenities

You'll discover restroom facilities available throughout your visit, however they might not always be in pristine condition. Water fountains are conveniently placed around the park, and parking spots are easy to find near the main areas.
