About the Location
Location and Layout
Nestled at the corner of Ming Avenue and New Stine Road in Bakersfield, California, Patriots Park spreads across a generous 20 acres. What makes this park a bit unique is how it curls around an apartment complex right at the intersection corner. Taking up nearly an entire city block, there's plenty of room to find your own little spot to enjoy.
Sports Facilities
If you're into baseball, you'll appreciate the lighted baseball fields complete with fencing and dugouts. They've gotten some recent updates, which is nice. Just keep in mind that they sit at the bottom of a storm drain overflow area, so after heavy rains, things can get a bit soggy down there.
Sports options don't end with baseball though. There are two lighted basketball courts and a lighted volleyball court for evening games. There's also a large open space well-suited for tossing a frisbee or kicking a soccer ball around.
Sitting directly across from West High School means the park sometimes catches the overflow energy from school events - especially during football season when the atmosphere can get pretty lively.
Picnic Areas
Planning a get-together? The park offers two reservable picnic areas side by side, equipped with tables, BBQs, and shaded serving spaces. You can book them separately or together if you're hosting a larger crowd.
For more casual outings, individual picnic spots are scattered throughout the park. Most come with their own barbecue and can seat between 8 to 16 people. Many offer good shade coverage - a real blessing during those hot Bakersfield summers.
Amenities
Kids will find plenty to do at the playground equipment areas. When nature calls, restroom facilities are available, although they've been undergoing some remodeling to improve their condition and capacity.
Patriots Park hosts various events year-round, including Juneteenth celebrations, making it a place for both organized sports and casual afternoon hangouts.
Dog-Friendly Environment
While there isn't a designated dog park section, your four-legged friends are welcome as long as they're leashed. You might even notice people letting their dogs play in the baseball fields when no games are happening - though this isn't officially sanctioned.
Just remember to clean up after your pet. Nobody wants to step in an unexpected surprise while enjoying the park.
Parking
You'll come across multiple parking lots, including one on the north end of the park. Keep in mind that some parking areas might be closed during maintenance or renovations. If you're planning a visit during peak times, it's worth checking whether all entrances are open before heading out.
