About the Location
Natural Beauty Spot
The Park at River Walk spans 32 acres in the heart of Bakersfield, California. Since opening in 2006, the park has transformed what was once just an oddly-shaped plot between the Kern River and Stockdale Highway into one of the city's most popular outdoor spaces.
At the park's center, you'll discover two interconnected lakes covering about 5 acres that double as groundwater recharge basins. Water flows from the Pioneer Canal into the upper 3-acre lake before making its way through a 1,000-foot cobblestone creek bed that connects to the 2-acre lower lake. Any extra water simply returns to the Kern River nearby - nothing goes to waste in this thoughtfully designed system.
The landscape feels genuinely natural, with native plants and trees indigenous to the Kern River corridor creating shady spots throughout. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate that the lakes attract a diverse array of birds, while ducks, turtles, and fish have made this park their home. It's a little ecosystem right in the middle of the city.

Get Moving
The walking paths wind through the park and offer scenic views throughout. If you're out for a casual stroll, morning jog, or bike ride, these paths provide an ideal route. They connect directly to the larger Kern River Bike Trail, allowing for extended cycling routes.
Fishing enthusiasts flock to the lower lake, which is regularly stocked with fish. The annual Fishing Derby has been a community tradition since 2004, thanks to the Kern County Sheriff's Office. They restock the lake and offer prizes for catching tagged or particularly large fish - a fun challenge even if you're just a casual angler.
The park offers plenty of open, grassy areas excellent for impromptu sports games, yoga sessions, or just lounging with a good book. Many locals swear by their morning and evening walks here, and if you time it right, the sunset views over the water are absolutely worth catching.

Comfort and Convenience
Planning a get-together? The park features several covered picnic areas with fixed benches and tables, well-suited for family gatherings or birthday celebrations. There are multiple BBQ grills scattered throughout, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
You'll find clean public restrooms near the playground and in other areas of the park. While they're generally well-maintained, it's worth noting they occasionally run out of soap, so bringing hand sanitizer isn't a bad idea.
Kids love the playground with its slides, swings, and climbing structures suitable for different age groups. The play areas feature both sand and cushioned surfaces for safety, but be aware there's limited shade covering - something to keep in mind during those hot Bakersfield summer days.
Dog owners, rejoice! The park is extremely dog-friendly, with many visitors bringing their four-legged friends to enjoy the trails. You'll find dog waste stations with bags at regular intervals around the park, making it easy to clean up after your pet.

Entertainment Hub
The Spectrum Amphitheater (formerly known as the Bright House Amphitheater) is the park's cultural centerpiece. This outdoor venue features a 3,000 square foot stage designed to appear as if it's an island surrounded by water - a pretty cool visual effect.
The amphitheater hosts everything from large productions to intimate performances, with space for up to 4,000 people. Throughout the year, you'll come across concerts, movie screenings, and various community events happening here, including the popular "Movie in the Park" series that draws crowds during warmer months.
The park combines natural elements with various amenities for different outdoor activities. Open daily from 5AM to 10PM, there's plenty of time to enjoy all it has to offer, whether you're seeking a peaceful morning walk or an evening of entertainment under the stars.
