About the Location
A Pocket of Berkeley History
Situated on Acton Street, Charlie Dorr Mini Park started its life as the Acton Tot Lot back in 1972. What makes this tiny green space special isn't just its facilities, but the way it came to be - neighbors literally rolled up their sleeves and built parts of it themselves. While contractors handled the main construction work, community volunteers pitched in to build and install a shade arbor (talk about neighborhood bonding!).
By November 1973, the park was officially named after the property's previous owner. All that community spirit didn't go unnoticed either - the park scored the 1975 Park Facility Citation from the California Parks and Recreation Society for its neighborhood-powered design and volunteer work. Pretty cool for a small local project!
What You'll Find There
Don't let the "mini" in its name fool you - despite being just 0.2 acres (about 8,700 square feet), this little park packs in quite a bit for its size.
If you're visiting with little ones, the tot playground is great for burning off some energy while you chat with other parents. Need a spot for lunch or a small gathering? The picnic areas and charming gazebo provide a lovely setting for outdoor meals or catching up with friends.
The park also features a simple lawn area where you can spread out a blanket, read a book, or just enjoy a bit of greenery in the city. It's nothing fancy, but sometimes that's exactly what you need - a calm, accessible touch of outdoor space right in the neighborhood.
