About Cragmont Rock Park

Impressive Panoramic Views

Set in the Berkeley Hills, Cragmont Rock Park is a 3-acre site that offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views you can find in the Bay Area. ...when Karl the Fog decides to stay home), you can see Berkeley, San Francisco, and beyond from this elevated perch - making it an excellent spot to catch those golden hour sunsets.

This park has been around since 1920, when neighbors banded together to buy the land from the Cragmont Land Company and gifted it to Berkeley at cost.

Where Rock Climbing History Was Made

Those rugged rock formations aren't just pretty to look at - they're a significant piece of climbing history. Dick Leonard, who's basically the godfather of technical climbing, formed the Cragmont Climbing Club right here on these rocks. His club eventually became part of the Sierra Club's Rock Climbing Section, and the techniques he developed at Cragmont were crucial for planning the first technical climb in Yosemite back in 1934.

Today, you can find several bolt anchors for top roping, with options for lead and traditional climbing too. One of the local favorites is a route called Farewell to Arms. The walls aren't super high, making this an ideal spot if you're just getting started with climbing or want to take a class without the intimidation factor of bigger walls.

What To Do When You're Not Hanging Off a Rock

Not into scaling vertical surfaces? No problem! The park offers a mix of grassy areas ideal for lounging, interesting rock outcroppings to explore, and hiking trails that wind through the terrain. The elevation means you're treated to amazing views wherever you wander.

Pack a lunch and claim one of the picnic tables scattered within the park - some are right on the grass while others offer a bit of shelter. There are handicap-accessible options too, so everyone can enjoy a meal with a view.

The Practical Stuff

As for amenities, you'll come across a basketball hoop if you're feeling sporty, a water spigot to refill your bottle, and a portable toilet (not glamorous, but necessary). The park stays relatively cool thanks to a healthy canopy of trees providing shade year-round.

A word of warning about parking - it can be tricky, as you'll be limited to street parking on the surrounding roads. Many locals actually prefer to walk up from lower neighborhoods using Berkeley's charming hidden stairways, which adds a bit of adventure (and a decent workout) to the journey.

The Vibe

What makes Cragmont special is its peaceful, residential setting. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. The park is extremely dog-friendly, so feel free to bring your four-legged friend along for the adventure. Just be mindful if you're bringing little ones - some of the paths around the edges can be steep, so keep those tiny explorers close by.
