Cragmont Rock Park is a 3-acre public park located in the Berkeley Hills of Berkeley, California. The park offers stunning panoramic views of Berkeley, San Francisco, and the Bay Area.
The park was dedicated for public use in 1920 after neighborhood residents purchased the land from the Cragmont Land Company and donated it to the City of Berkeley at cost.
Rock Climbing Heritage
The park is known for its distinctive rock formations, which have made it a popular destination for rock climbing enthusiasts. Dick Leonard, often referred to as the "father of technical climbing," formed the Cragmont Climbing Club here, which later became part of the Sierra Club's Rock Climbing Section.
The techniques Leonard developed at Cragmont Rock were instrumental in planning the first technical rock climb in Yosemite in 1934.
