About the Location
Historic Roots
Established in 1907, San Pablo Park is Berkeley's oldest park and one of its largest. This 12.95-acre urban green space has served the community for over a century.
The park was developed between 1910 and 1914, with University of California Professor John Gregg laying out the initial plans.
Play Areas
The park features multiple play areas for children of different ages. A fenced-in tot lot at the south end includes slides, swings, and climbing structures perfect for younger children.
Older kids can enjoy a separate playground that boasts a significant rope climbing structure and slide, among other amenities.
Sports Facilities
San Pablo Park is known for its excellent sports facilities. It houses two baseball diamonds that have been a fixture since the park's early days.
The park also includes basketball courts and six tennis courts, making it a hub for various athletic activities. Open grassy areas provide space for informal games and picnicking.
Community Center
The Frances Albrier Community Center, located within the park, offers additional amenities and hosts various community events and programs.
Dedicated in 1964, the center includes meeting halls and spaces for classes and creative activities.
Renovations and Improvements
Throughout its history, San Pablo Park has undergone several renovations. Recent updates have included new playground equipment, resurfaced tennis courts, and the addition of shade structures and drinking fountains.
The park continues to be a vital part of the Berkeley community, offering a space for recreation, relaxation, and community gatherings.
