About the Location

Historic Significance

Magee Park is a historic 2.1-acre park located in Carlsbad, California, just one block away from the Pacific Ocean. The park showcases several structures that offer a glimpse into Carlsbad's past, making it a significant site for local history enthusiasts.

The centerpiece of the park is the craftsman-style Magee House, originally built in 1887 by Samuel Church Smith, one of the founders of Carlsbad Land and Water Company. This house now serves as the home of the Carlsbad Historical Society and its archives, furnished in a turn-of-the-century style to reflect the life of early Carlsbad settlers.

Historical Buildings

The park also features other historic buildings, including Heritage Hall, which was built in 1926 as St. Patrick's Catholic Church and later served as Carlsbad's first City Hall and police station. The Shipley-Magee Barn, the Twin Inns Granary, and the Twin Inns Gazebo are additional structures that contribute to the park's historical significance.

Rose Garden

One of the park's highlights is its beautiful rose garden, which has earned Carlsbad recognition from the American Rose Society. The garden contains over 125 different roses representing 15 different rose families, reflecting Carlsbad's agricultural heritage.

This nationally registered rose garden helped Carlsbad earn the title of "An American Rose City" in 2002.

Events and Gatherings

Magee Park serves as a popular venue for weddings and other events, with the ability to accommodate up to 500 guests when rented in conjunction with the Granary and picnic areas. The park's proximity to the ocean and its historical charm make it an attractive location for various gatherings and community activities.
