Fairview Park
About Fairview Park
Natural Landscape
Welcome to Fairview Park, one of Costa Mesa's largest green spaces. Sprawling across 208 acres, this park offers a refreshing escape from urban life with its 195 acres of untouched natural terrain and 13 acres of carefully maintained landscape.
What makes this place noteworthy? For starters, it houses two Nationally Registered Cultural Resource Historic Sites and five distinct habitat ecosystems where rare and endangered plants and animals thrive in their natural home.
Ecological Diversity
The natural variety here is impressive. From lush wetlands to flowing riparian grasslands, coastal sage scrub areas, and seasonal vernal pools that appear after good rainfall - Fairview Park is like a living textbook of Southern California ecosystems.
We've counted (well, the experts have) 197 different plant varieties, including 10 rare species, while bird enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that 220 different feathered friends have been spotted making this park their home, nest, or rest stop. After a good rain, the park really comes alive - those vernal pools fill up and become temporary ponds hosting the endangered San Diego fairy shrimp, tiny but fascinating creatures you won't see in many other places.
Trails and Recreation
Lacing through this natural wonderland are 7 miles of trails fantastic for walking, hiking, or biking adventures. You'll come across both paved paths for easier strolls and natural trails with varying elevations that offer a bit more challenge if you're feeling energetic.
The wide open spaces make Fairview Park ideal for flying kites when the breeze picks up, enjoying a relaxed picnic, or just sitting back and soaking in nature. There are picnic tables within the park, with some clustered in shaded areas when you need a break from the California sun.
Historical Significance
Every step you take at Fairview Park is a walk through history. This land once served as the Native American village of Lukup, with artifacts dating back to at least 1500 B.C. still preserved in the soil beneath your feet.
The park remains a sacred place for the Tongva and Acjachemen tribes and their descendants. Keep your eyes peeled for white shells scattered in the soil - these aren't just random debris but remnants of ancient gatherings near the Santa Ana river delta.
Connectivity
A practical feature of Fairview Park is how it connects to other natural spaces. It is a gateway to the Santa Ana River Trail, the Orange Coast River Park, and the neighboring Orange County Talbert Regional Park.
This means your outdoor adventure doesn't have to end at the park boundaries - you can extend your walk or bike ride into a much bigger exploration of Costa Mesa's natural areas.
Unique Attractions
Kids (and honestly, adults too) get particularly excited about the miniature railroad run by the Orange County Model Engineers that offers free rides on specific days. It's the kind of simple joy that creates lasting memories.
For those fascinated by things that fly, there's a designated area for model airplane flying managed by the Harbor Soaring Society - a fun spot to either participate or just watch these impressive miniature aircraft take to the skies.
Scenic Views
Consider staying for sunset, especially from the western edge overlooking Talbert Nature Preserve and the Santa Ana River Trail. Find yourself a spot on one of the park's elevated positions and you'll be rewarded with panoramic views that, on clear days, might even include glimpses of the ocean in the distance.
Wildlife Viewing
Beyond the impressive bird population, you'll likely encounter rabbits hopping about, lizards sunning themselves on rocks, and occasionally coyotes roaming their territory. Just remember that this is their home that we're visiting.
You'll need to keep your pets leashed, and do pay attention to those rattlesnake warning signs when exploring the natural trails - they're not just there for decoration.
Seasonal Events
Summer evenings at Fairview Park take on a festive atmosphere during the annual Concerts in the Park series organized by the Costa Mesa Foundation. These community gatherings bring live music, food vendors, and neighbors together under the open sky.
If you're a fan of wildflowers, plan a visit after winter and spring rains when the landscape erupts in a kaleidoscope of colors - a natural show that photographers and nature lovers won't want to miss.
