Whittier Narrows Recreation Area
About Whittier Narrows Recreation Area
Park Overview
Found in South El Monte, California, the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area spreads across a generous 1,492 acres of open space. This massive green space is one of LA County's biggest outdoor areas.
At the center of it all sits the Whittier Narrows Dam, built back in the 1950s by the US Army Corps of Engineers as part of their effort to manage flooding in the area.
Park Sections and Lakes
The park is neatly divided into five sections (A through E), each with its own character and offerings.
The park features three interconnected bodies of water: Legg Lake, Center Lake, and North Lake. If you enjoy fishing, the California Department of Fish and Game stocks these lakes with trout, bass, and catfish throughout the year.
Fancy getting out on the water? You can rent pedal boats to cruise around the lakes, or bring your own kayak for a peaceful paddle on the calm waters.
Trails and Nature
Lacing throughout the park is a network of walking and jogging trails, including a 5-kilometer course that loops around the lakes. These paths come alive in the mornings with joggers and walkers, but they're equally meant for a lazy afternoon stroll.
Bike enthusiasts can cruise along the paved pathways, and if you're looking for a longer ride, you can connect to the San Gabriel River Bike Trail from the park's eastern edge.
Nature lovers should make a beeline for the Whittier Narrows Nature Center, where you'll come across exhibits about local flora and fauna, plus educational programs and guided tours. The park itself is teeming with wildlife - curious squirrels might approach you, and the lakes are home to various birds, ducks, and geese that add life to the landscape.
Sports and Recreation Facilities
The park doesn't skimp on sporting options. You can find softball and soccer fields, tennis courts, and disc golf courses scattered across the grounds.
But the park also has some less common facilities - a BMX facility, an archery range, and even a paved airstrip where hobbyists fly radio-controlled aircraft.
There's also a fascinating military museum featuring tanks and other armored vehicles that's worth checking out.
Amenities for Visitors
Picnicking is practically a way of life here, with plenty of tables, barbecue grills, and large group areas you can reserve for gatherings. The sprawling lawns and shady spots make perfect settings for family reunions, birthday parties, or just a casual weekend meal outdoors.
If you've got kids in tow, you'll appreciate the playgrounds scattered across the park. They cater to various age groups, but do note that the equipment can get pretty hot during those summer months.
You'll find restrooms within reasonable walking distance from most areas of the park. As for parking, it's free on weekdays, with a $7 fee implemented on weekends and holidays.
Special Events and Activities
During the year, the park transforms for various special events - from cultural festivals to seasonal celebrations like the Water Lantern Festival and Halloween activities.
If fishing is your thing, don't forget to bring a valid California fishing license before casting your line into the lakes.
Whittier Narrows offers a natural setting within the urban landscape. Whether you're interested in active recreation or just seeking a quiet spot in nature, this diverse park is accessible without having to venture far from the city.
