About the Location
Natural Features
Situated in Fremont, California, Quarry Lakes Regional Recreation Area spans 471 acres of repurposed land that once housed bustling gravel quarries. Now part of the East Bay Regional Parks system, this urban space has been transformed from its industrial past.
The heart of the park consists of several interconnected bodies of water, including Horseshoe Lake and Rainbow Lake, which together make up about 350 acres. These lakes, along with Willow Slough and Lago Los Osos, are linked by well-kept walking trails that meander throughout the property.
Beyond their recreational value, these lakes actually serve a practical purpose as groundwater recharge basins managed by the Alameda County Water District. The revitalized landscape is now home to diverse wildlife. On any given day, you might spot deer grazing near the shoreline, rabbits darting through underbrush, or ground squirrels scurrying about. Bird enthusiasts will appreciate the diversity here - geese and wood ducks are common sights, while majestic blue herons often wade in the shallows. If you're really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a bald eagle soaring overhead.

Historical Background
The story of this area stretches back to the mid-19th century, when workers extracted gravel from Alameda Creek's banks to help build the western portion of the transcontinental railroad.
Quarry Lakes as we know it today emerged from a thoughtful partnership between the East Bay Regional Park District and the Alameda County Water District. The land was acquired gradually between 1975 and 1992, with actual park construction beginning in 1997.
Starting in 2000, recreational amenities began taking shape - grassy areas for lounging, picnic spots for gathering, shade pavilions for escaping the sun, and a boat launch ramp for water access. The once-industrial site has been reclaimed by nature, with mature trees and vegetation now defining the landscape.

Recreational Activities
The park provides various options for outdoor recreation. Horseshoe Lake features a swimming area with a sandy beach. During summer months, lifeguards keep watch, making it a safer option for families.
For fishing, there are designated areas around the park - just remember to bring your California fishing license and an East Bay Regional Park District fishing access permit. The lakes are regularly stocked with rainbow trout, bass, catfish, and other game fish, making for some satisfying catches.
Non-motorized boating provides another way to experience the water, while the mainly flat, gravel trails are fantastic for hiking and biking without too much exertion. For something more active, the beach volleyball courts offer a fun way to spend an afternoon with friends.

Picnic Areas and Facilities
Scattered within the park are numerous picnic tables, many positioned to take advantage of beautiful views across the lakes to the surrounding hills. If you're planning a larger gathering, several covered pavilions can be reserved in advance, while smaller groups can usually find individual tables on a first-come, first-served basis.
You'll find BBQ grills throughout the picnic areas, fantastic for cooking up an outdoor feast while enjoying the natural setting. Clean restroom facilities are conveniently located near parking lots and along some of the trails, adding to the comfort of your visit.

Botanical Features
One of the park's peaceful escapes is its Rare Fruit Grove, which showcases both native and exotic trees and shrubs. There's also a lovely demonstration garden filled with various plants, flowers, and assorted roses that add splashes of color and fragrance to the landscape.
In spring, wildflowers dot the grounds with natural beauty, the result of careful restoration projects that have created thriving habitats for diverse wildlife. This season brings many vibrant colors to the park landscape.

Trail Connections
Quarry Lakes connects to the broader regional trail system. The park's paths link up with the Alameda Creek Regional Trail, which extends from Niles Canyon westward to Coyote Hills and eventually reaches the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge on San Francisco Bay.
This connectivity means you can extend your adventure well beyond the park's boundaries if you're feeling ambitious. From certain spots within Quarry Lakes, you can take in impressive views of Mission Peak, Mount Allison, Monument Peak, and neighboring regional parks - perfect backdrops for your nature photos.

Visitor Information
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7 AM to 5 PM. You'll need to pay a $5 parking fee per vehicle (card only, no cash accepted). Four-legged friends are welcome for an additional $2 fee, but they must stay on leash at all times and aren't allowed in the beach area.
If you're looking for a quieter experience, try visiting on a weekday when crowds tend to thin out. The park takes on a special quality during the golden hour before sunset, when the light casts a warm glow across the lakes and illuminates the surrounding hills. It's an excellent time to reflect and appreciate this reclaimed natural space in the midst of urban life.
