About Woodward Park
History and Overview
Located in northeast Fresno, Woodward Park stretches across 300 acres along the south bank of the San Joaquin River. This green oasis came to life in 1968, thanks to Ralph Woodward, a Fresno local who dreamed of creating a regional park and bird sanctuary for everyone to enjoy.
The park is a tapestry of lush greenery, colorful gardens, and peaceful lakes. You can explore five miles of multipurpose trails that connect to the San Joaquin River Parkway's Lewis S. Eaton Trail system. Just a heads-up: parking costs $5 per vehicle, with payment kiosks scattered within the grounds.
Trails and Natural Features
The winding trails are meant for a morning jog, a leisurely stroll, or a bike ride. With both paved and dirt paths, you can choose your own adventure - some trails even lead you down to the river's edge. If you're a bird enthusiast, make your way to the southeast corner of the park, where the diversity of feathered residents makes for some excellent birdwatching.

The ponds and lake aren't just pretty to look at - they're also spots where you can cast a line, with some ponds occasionally stocked with trout. As you wander through the park, you'll likely cross paths with ducks, geese, and plenty of squirrels darting about. This ecosystem reflects Woodward's original vision of creating a sanctuary for birds and wildlife.
Shinzen Japanese Garden
A highlight of the park is the Shinzen Friendship Garden. The project was championed by a group of Japanese-Americans led by local accountant Ben Nakamura, who proposed a Japanese garden within Woodward Park. Landscape architect Paul Saito designed it, and the garden was officially dedicated in 1981 with a large delegation traveling from Fresno's sister city of Kochi, Japan. It covers 5 acres and was conceived as a Japanese stroll garden organized around the four seasons.
Each of the four seasonal sections has its own character. The Spring section is planted with azaleas, camellias, crabapples, irises, and flowering cherry and plum trees. The Koi Pond anchors the Summer section, while Autumn brings warm fall color from tulip trees, Chinese pistache, and tallow trees. The Winter section is anchored by a large waterfall, pines, and other evergreens, giving the garden a distinct atmosphere year-round. One of its more unusual features is a thatched-roofed teahouse that was built in Japan, shipped to Fresno, and reassembled by Japanese carpenters on the shore of the pond in 1989. There is a separate admission fee for this area.

The garden is also home to an impressive bonsai collection worth seeking out. In 2015, it received over 100 specimens from the Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF) Collection, originally housed at the former Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture in Hanford, California. The bonsai exhibit typically welcomes visitors on weekends from 10AM-4PM and Wednesday through Friday from 10AM-1PM.
Recreation and Facilities
Woodward Park functions as a community gathering spot for various outdoor activities and events. The 2,500-seat amphitheater hosts everything from concerts to performances, including the popular Boots in the Park series. The park has also become a go-to venue for cross-country running competitions, hosting high school and college championships all year long.
There's something for everyone here, with multiple children's playgrounds dotted across the park, picnic areas complete with barbecue pits, and a fenced dog park where four-legged friends can run free.
Sports and Activities
For those seeking a bit more adrenaline, the park features a BMX course, a mountain bike skills progression park, and a disc golf course. If you're a seasoned pro or just looking to try something new, these facilities make Woodward Park a destination worth exploring.
The Art of Life area provides a unique space where children can play with musical instruments among commemorative features. Throughout your visit, you'll notice dedicated memorials, benches, and tributes honoring community members.
