About the Location

A Green Oasis with a Purpose

Located in Garden Grove, California, Haster Basin Recreational Park stretches across 22.6 acres of urban landscape. After a major renovation completed in 2014, this park serves two purposes - it's a place for recreation and relaxation, while also functioning as a flood control basin for the area.

The $25.3 million renovation was a substantial project. It involved collaboration between the California Department of Water Resources and the County of Orange for funding. The project added an extra 2 acres of usable space and introduced several new features to the park.

Trails That Keep You Moving

A 3/4-mile decomposed granite trail circles the basin's perimeter. Regardless of whether you're cycling, jogging, or just enjoying a leisurely walk, this loop offers a smooth, scenic route through the park. Along the way, you'll find exercise stations where you can do pull-ups, push-ups, or work on your balance.

As you make your way around, you'll notice the diverse plant life and might even catch glimpses of local wildlife going about their day. Bird enthusiasts, keep your eyes peeled - you'll likely spot various species, including ducks paddling about the lake area. There's something refreshing about starting your morning with a stroll through this natural setting.

Something for Everyone

The park doesn't skimp on amenities. Kids can burn off energy at the modest but well-designed playground, while families can gather at one of the covered picnic areas equipped with barbecue grills. The basketball court sees plenty of action from local players, and there's a generous grassy space that's ideal for everything from frisbee tossing to afternoon naps.

Accessibility was clearly a priority in the design - the wide, flat paths throughout make it easy for wheelchair users to navigate and enjoy the space. If you get hungry, food trucks often park near the Haster Street entrance, providing food options after your activities.

Engineering Meets Nature

At the heart of the park is a lake that functions as both a visual feature and a key component of the county's flood control system. The basin now boasts an improved pump station running on natural gas, capable of moving water at an impressive 70,000 gallons per minute to keep potential flooding at bay.

Though fenced off for safety reasons, the lake enhances the park's beauty and attracts wildlife to the area. The surrounding landscape features various plants and flowers, however it could benefit from incorporating more native Southern California species to support the local ecosystem and reduce maintenance needs.

Before You Visit

The park has two entrances, with the main one located on Haster Street. Note that if you're using the Lampson Avenue entrance, it's exit-only with tire spikes, so plan your arrival accordingly. Don't worry about finding a spot - there's plenty of parking available.

When nature calls, portable restrooms are your best bet, as the permanent facilities are sometimes locked. Dog lovers can bring their four-legged friends along, but remember to keep them leashed at all times. For your safety, it's best to enjoy all the park has to offer during daylight hours.
