Bidwell Park
About Bidwell Park
Transformation in Progress
Bidwell Park is in the midst of an exciting makeover that started back in 2019. What's happening here isn't just a simple update - it's a combination of the existing park with the former Bidwell Elementary School site to create a community center and expanded recreational area for South Hayward residents.
In November 2020, the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors gave the green light to renovation plans that include transforming two buildings along Fairway Street into a community hub where neighbors can gather.
What to Expect
Sprawling across 10.5 acres near the intersection of Fairway and Rousseau Streets, the reimagined Bidwell Park is shaping up to be a welcoming neighborhood favorite designed for everyone - whether you're a toddler, teen, or retiree.
The design thoughtfully incorporates a variety of features to serve the diverse needs of the community. Before breaking ground, the project completed all necessary environmental reviews in line with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) - ensuring the development respects both the community and surroundings.
Current Status
The project moved into the construction document phase in 2022, with visible progress starting in November 2022 when crews demolished a classroom building in the park's interior.
The Hayward Area Recreation and Park District has been collecting community feedback through workshops and online surveys to help shape the new park design. This input helps ensure the space will reflect local preferences and needs.
