About the Location
Natural Habitat
Gibbs Park, also known as Norma Gibbs Butterfly Park, is a unique natural area located in Huntington Beach, California. The park is situated off Graham Street between Warner and Heil Avenues.
This 6.83-acre park is particularly notable for its role as an overwinter resting shelter for North American Monarch butterflies. The park's eucalyptus grove, acquired by the city in 1973, provides a crucial habitat for these majestic creatures.
Wildlife Observation
Visitors can often observe monarch butterflies in the park, especially during peak season from October through March, though they can be found year-round. Many visitors come specifically to see these beautiful insects, along with hummingbirds that also frequent the area.
The park has undergone significant restoration and improvement efforts over the years, led by a team including the City of Huntington Beach, HB Tree Society, and community volunteers. These efforts have transformed Gibbs Park into a beautiful natural space that serves both wildlife and the local community.
At the entrance of the park, visitors can admire a beautiful tile floor depicting the butterfly life cycle, adding an educational element to the experience.
Park Amenities
Gibbs Park offers recreational opportunities for visitors. The park features a winding concrete path that runs from front to back, scattered with benches where visitors can sit and relax among the trees.
In 2021, an accessible trail was added through the back half of the park to enhance wildlife viewing opportunities. This path is wheelchair accessible, making the natural beauty of the park available to all visitors.
Numerous picnic tables are available throughout the park, providing perfect spots for a meal under the shade of eucalyptus trees. The park also offers ample trash facilities to keep the area clean.
Dog-Friendly Space
The park is popular with local dog owners, especially in the late afternoons when many bring their pets for exercise and socialization. Water bowls and drinking water for dogs are available, as well as waste bags for pet cleanup.
Connected Spaces
Gibbs Park connects to the adjacent Summerlane Park, which provides additional recreational facilities including a playground and open fields for sports and activities. Together, these connected spaces offer a variety of outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages.
Practical Information
Parking along Graham Street can be limited, especially during peak hours, so arriving early is recommended. The park does not have public restroom facilities, so plan accordingly for your visit.
