About the Location

The Green Heart of UCI

Set in the middle of UC Irvine's campus, Aldrich Park is a sprawling 19-acre circular green space that represents the university's natural centerpiece. Named after Daniel Aldrich, UCI's first Chancellor, this green space sits at the core of campus with academic buildings arranged in concentric circles around it - like a peaceful island in a sea of scholarly activity.

Many consider it one of the most beautiful central green spaces on American college campuses. The expansive lawn creates an inviting atmosphere where you can kick off your shoes and feel the grass between your toes - a nice escape from the academic intensity that surrounds it.

A Tree Lover's Paradise

Aldrich Park contains a variety of trees - 51 different types to be exact, with some towering giants reaching over 100 feet tall. Among these woody wonders are 33 species of eucalyptus, giving the park a lush, almost forest-like feel in some areas.

This arboreal diversity has earned UCI recognition as a Tree Campus USA, an honor shared by only 73 other campuses nationwide. If you happen to visit in June, you're in for a special treat as many trees burst into bloom, painting the grounds with vibrant natural colors.

Thoughtfully Designed Spaces

The park features a network of paved and dirt paths throughout its landscaped grounds. At its geographical center, you'll discover a garden and commemorative plaque marking the founding of UCI - a quiet nod to the university's origins.

Interestingly, the park's design draws inspiration from New York City's Central Park and was brought to life under landscape architect Gene Uematsu's direction. Within the park, you'll discover plenty of benches where you can sit and soak in the surroundings or simply watch campus life unfold around you.

The Social Hub of Campus Life

Aldrich Park functions as the social center of the university. On any given day, you might spot students sprawled on blankets studying, friends gathering for impromptu picnics, or someone finding a quiet moment of solitude beneath a towering tree.

The open areas frequently host major campus events, from lively concerts and cultural festivals to the pomp and circumstance of commencement ceremonies. The space feels removed from academic pressures, even while being surrounded by the university.

The Famous Ring Road

Encircling Aldrich Park is the aptly named Ring Road, the main pedestrian thoroughfare that connects the campus. This circular walkway boasts a diameter of 256 meters and a circumference of 1609 meters, with elevation changing between 23 and 38 meters as you make your way around.

Beyond the Park

Aldrich Park's central location makes it easily accessible from anywhere on campus. A shopping center with various dining options and retail stores is just a short walk away.

Whether you want a peaceful place to gather your thoughts, a shady spot to read, or a patch of grass for stargazing, Aldrich Park provides a versatile green space at the center of UCI.
