Located in Irvine, California, the Great Park Sports Complex sprawls across 1,300 acres of what was once the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro. Taking up nearly 29% of the former air base, this massive green space has been transformed into something pretty special for the community.

If you're into sports, you'll find plenty of options here. The complex has 24 soccer fields, 10 fields dedicated to baseball and softball, and 25 courts for tennis, sand volleyball, and basketball. These aren't just your average neighborhood facilities either - they're top-notch spaces that host everything from casual weekend games to serious tournaments.

Family-Friendly Amenities

The Great Park offers several options for families with children. The playground areas are a hit with families, featuring a larger playground with climbing structures and a zip line that usually has children lining up for their turn. Look up and you can't miss the Great Park Balloon, a giant tethered helium balloon that lifts visitors 400 feet into the air for breathtaking panoramic views. It operates Thursday through Sunday, and while it used to be free for everyone, now adults pay $10 while kids still ride for free.

Other crowd-pleasers include a charming carousel ($10 for a full-day pass) and a certified farmers market that pops up every Sunday from 10am-2pm, offering fresh produce and tasty treats from local vendors.

Need to cool off? The park also features an ice skating rink across the property - a somewhat unexpected but welcome addition to the recreational lineup.
