About the Location
What to Play With
Hicks Canyon Community Park offers a thoughtfully designed playground that caters to kids of all ages. There are two separate play areas: one specially crafted for the little ones (ages 2-5) and another for the bigger kids (ages 5-12).
The playground's recycled rubber surface means fewer scraped knees and safer tumbles. A recent renovation has replaced the old sand pits with new play structures and two swings - a welcome upgrade for both parents and kids. We appreciate the thoughtful safety touch: fencing on the parking lot side helps keep energetic toddlers from wandering too far.
Sports Heaven
Sports enthusiasts will feel right at home with the park's lighted soccer fields and lighted baseball diamonds. These facilities are popular spots for local AYSO soccer teams and Little League baseball games.
The baseball fields have hosted some significant youth competitions, including the area Tournament of Champions, and are generally well-maintained. While the soccer fields have historically been considered among Orange County's finest, they could use a bit of TLC at the moment.
If basketball is more your speed, the park has basketball courts available too.
Nature Paths
One of our favorite features has to be the Hicks Canyon Trail that connects with the Peters Canyon Trail. This path for pedestrians and cyclists winds beneath fragrant eucalyptus trees and includes a tunnel passage under Culver Drive.
The trail system offers both dirt and asphalt paths running parallel to each other, with the paved section well-lit for those evening strolls. Stretching north to Portola Avenue and south to Harvard Boulevard, there's plenty of ground to cover whether you're taking a casual walk, training for a marathon, or enjoying a bike ride through the natural landscape.
Comfort Spots
Across the park, you can find plenty of benches for resting or people-watching. For larger gatherings, there are two covered shelters with multiple tables and a fire pit area. The covered picnic section comes equipped with large charcoal grills - ideal for family reunions or birthday celebrations.
You'll also find convenient amenities like centrally located restrooms and drinking fountains that include bottle-filling stations. Just note that parking can be tight during busy sports events, so you might want to arrive early.
The park's perimeter is lined with trees that provide natural shade and create a peaceful atmosphere. Dog owners can bring their furry friends when no sporting events are happening - just remember to clean up afterward.
