Alderwood Park
About Alderwood Park
Park Overview
Positioned in the corner of Whitewood and Baxter Roads in Murrieta, California, Alderwood Park (formerly Golden Cities Park) offers a cozy seven-acre retreat for locals. This city-maintained neighborhood park might not be the biggest green space around, but it provides a clean, safe environment where residents - including those from nearby gated communities - can enjoy some quality outdoor time.
Layout and Design
Alderwood Park has a neat east-west division, with different features scattered throughout each section. A cement walking trail wraps around the perimeter, and along the way, you'll discover body weight machines where you can squeeze in a workout while enjoying the fresh air.
The park keeps its gates open 24/7, however you might not be able to park after midnight. If you're a night owl visitor, just know that you might cross paths with some local wildlife - yes, including coyotes - after dark.
Dog Park
The dog park is one of Alderwood's notable features. It thoughtfully separates the play areas for large and small dogs, featuring a mix of turf and decomposed granite that gives your four-legged friends plenty of texture to explore while they romp off-leash.
You can find shaded seating areas where you can relax while watching your pup enjoy the dog exercise equipment and navigate the agility course. The park provides pet waste stations to keep things clean, but take note: the water fountains for dogs sometimes don't work, so bringing your own water bottle for Fido is a smart move.
There's a really nice community vibe here, with regulars who tend to welcome newcomers with wagging tails (both the dogs and, metaphorically, their humans). If you're planning to make an afternoon of it, there are shaded tables just outside the fenced areas fantastic for a little picnic while your dog plays.
Recreational Facilities
For pickleball enthusiasts, The park features pickleball courts - currently two dedicated outdoor concrete courts with permanent lines and nets. There's talk of expanding to three or four courts down the road. One court can be reserved, while the other is first-come, first-served.
Basketball players can shoot some hoops on the dual half-court, but the rims have seen better days and might be a bit bent.
If tennis is more your game, you're in luck - Alderwood has tennis courts waiting for your best serves.
Amenities
When nature calls, clean restrooms are available and open early in the morning. Just be aware they're a bit of a trek from the dog park and picnic zones.
The picnic area offers a central gathering spot with covered tables that provide much-needed shade during hot California days. In a particularly thoughtful touch, some tables even come with power outlets - great for charging your phone or plugging in a small cooler during longer gatherings.
Children's Area
Kids haven't been forgotten at Alderwood Park. A spacious playground area sits in a sandbox base, complete with slides, swings, and climbing equipment that will keep the little ones entertained. It's well-maintained and particularly suitable for younger children who need a clean, safe place to burn off some energy.
Future Development
Alderwood Park isn't done growing yet. Phase 2 plans include an additional playground and a recreation center. The park already features a clubhouse that gets plenty of compliments for its attractive design and appearance.
