About the Location
A Piece of Oakland History
Located in Oakland, California, Mosswood Park spreads across 11 acres of green space that's been open to the community since 1909-1911. The Oakland Parks and Recreation Department keeps this historic space thriving for all to enjoy.
Before becoming a public haven, this land was quite the fancy estate. J. Mora Moss and his wife Julia Wood once called it home, and their Carpenter Gothic style Victorian mansion from 1864 still stands proudly at the park's heart. Now known as the J. Mora Moss House, it holds status as an Oakland Heritage Landmark.
The city scooped up the property in 1907, transforming the private estate into a public park just a few years later.
Natural Beauty & Playgrounds
When you visit Mosswood, you'll find yourself surrounded by mature trees - old-growth oaks, towering pines, and eucalyptus creating a natural retreat from city life. The large, open lawn meadow at the center invites everything from frisbee games to peaceful afternoon reading.
Interestingly, the West Branch of Cemetery Creek (now called Glen Echo Creek) once meandered through these grounds but now flows underground beneath the lawn.
Families appreciate the park's two playground areas - one specially designed for the little ones under 5, and another where older kids can climb and explore. Both playgrounds are fenced, giving parents peace of mind while their children play.
Get Your Game On
For sports enthusiasts, Mosswood offers several options. The basketball courts pulse with energy, especially on weekends, and have a rich history in the local basketball scene. You'll often find pick-up games happening among players of all skill levels.
Beyond basketball, you can serve up a match on the tennis courts, catch fly balls at the baseball field, or simply enjoy one of the many picnic areas scattered across the park. While there's no dedicated BBQ zone, the spacious grassy areas make perfect spots for spreading a blanket and enjoying lunch outdoors.
Dog parents, take note - your furry friends are welcome here too. Though there's no fully enclosed dog park, the open grassy spaces provide plenty of room for dogs to stretch their legs (just remember to bring those waste bags).
The Heart of a Community
Situated in the Mosswood neighborhood, the park is embraced by West MacArthur Boulevard to the north, Broadway to the east, Webster Street to the west, and Interstate 580 to the south.
Mosswood Park has been important to generations of Oakland residents. It's seen pre-NBA basketball players honing their skills and hosted many community gatherings over the years.
The park comes alive during special events like the Mosswood Meltdown, a music festival that has attracted big names like the B-52s and sometimes features filmmaker John Waters as host. You might also catch Juneteenth celebrations, vibrant Caribbean festivals, or the Mosswood Legend's Reunion basketball event that honors the park's sporting legacy.
Looking Forward
Mosswood faced a significant setback in November 2016 when the original recreation center from 1953 was destroyed by fire. In true Oakland spirit, temporary facilities were quickly established to keep community services running.
Today, the City of Oakland is working closely with community members to reimagine the park's future, including plans for a brand-new community center. You might notice some construction zones during your visit as these improvements take shape.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 6AM to 10PM - plenty of time to enjoy this historic urban oasis.
