A Park With History

What's in a name? Quite a lot, actually. Once simply named after its location, the park was rechristened in 1967 to honor Joe Balderrama, an Oceanside native and World War II soldier who lost his life in Germany in 1944. Today, Joseph Balderrama Park spans 3 acres in Oceanside's Eastside neighborhood, providing much-needed green space for local residents.

Community Hub

At the heart of the park stands a 12,000-square-foot recreation center that truly is the neighborhood's living room. Inside you'll find an auditorium complete with a stage and kitchen, a lively game/activities room, four flexible multi-purpose/meeting rooms, and two peaceful courtyards.

It's no wonder the center draws about 100,000 visitors annually through its diverse activities and special events. This place stays busy!

Outdoor Fun for Everyone

Step outside and you can find something for every age and interest. Kids can burn off energy on the play equipment, while sports enthusiasts might head to the basketball and tennis courts or the versatile multipurpose field.

Looking for something more laid-back? The picnic areas with barbecue facilities are well-suited for family gatherings or a relaxed afternoon with friends.

Serving the Community

The recreation center, funded by a Community Development Block Grant, offers important services to local residents. It fosters partnerships between North County Community Services and the Vista Community Clinic, making it a place to play and a resource hub for the neighborhood.

You'll find the park just two blocks north of Mission Avenue on San Diego Street - easily accessible for Eastside residents.
