About the Location
Historic Centerpiece
Plaza Park, also known as the Orange Plaza or colloquially called the Orange Circle, is a historic public park located in the heart of Orange, California. Established in 1886, this 0.1-acre park forms the centerpiece of Downtown Orange and is a defining feature of the city's layout.
Unlike many other cities in the area, Orange was built around the roundabout created by this park, giving it a unique Midwest charm in Southern California.
Notable Features
The park's most recognizable feature is its decorative fountain, installed in 1937. This fountain, which replaced an earlier bronze fountain from 1887, features tilework by Charles McCandless and remains a focal point of the plaza.
The park also contains walkways, numerous benches for relaxation, and mature trees, some of which date back to the late 1800s. The lush greenery provides welcome shade and contributes to the park's serene atmosphere.
Historic Significance
Plaza Park is surrounded by a traffic circle and is part of the Plaza Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The district encompasses a one-square-mile area known for its collection of historic buildings, many dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Visitors can enjoy the historical ambiance while exploring the surrounding area, which features beautifully preserved architecture that tells the story of Orange's development.
Community Hub
The park functions as a community gathering space and hosts various events throughout the year. It's particularly magical during the Christmas season when it features festive decorations, lights, and an annual tree lighting ceremony that draws locals and visitors alike.
The park is situated within walking distance of Chapman University and is surrounded by a variety of small-scale retail shops, restaurants, and antique stores, contributing to the area's reputation as the "Antique Capital of California".
Visitor Experience
Plaza Park offers a peaceful retreat where people come to picnic, read, or simply enjoy the atmosphere. The small but charming space creates a sense of community, with locals and tourists mingling in this central gathering spot.
The surrounding streets feature numerous dining options, making it easy to grab a meal before or after visiting the park. During evenings, the park takes on a different character as lighting enhances its historic features and creates a pleasant ambiance for nighttime strolls.
