About Plaza Park
The Historic Heart of Orange
Located in the core of Orange, California, Plaza Park (or as the locals call it, the Orange Circle) is a tiny 0.1-acre patch of green with a significant history in the downtown area. Dating back to 1886, this little park has been quietly shaping the city's identity for over a century. Unlike many Southern California cities, Orange developed around this circular park, giving the downtown area a distinctly Midwestern feel that differs from SoCal's typical grid layouts.
What You'll Find There
The centerpiece that catches everyone's eye is the fountain from 1937, with its beautiful tilework crafted by Charles McCandless. It replaced an earlier fountain from 1887 - a community effort funded through bake sales, a local theatrical production, and other fundraisers that together raised $535. That original fountain featured birds with beaks spouting water, a charming detail that made it a neighborhood landmark for decades. Around the current fountain, you can find winding walkways, plenty of benches for people-watching, and magnificent trees that have been providing shade since the Victorian era.
A Glimpse of History
The park's origins are a bit scrappier than its current appearance might suggest. In the 1870s, the site at the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Glassell Street was little more than a trash-filled vacant lot. A local merchant named Robert L. Crowder took the initiative to plant trees there, and the space gradually evolved into an informal gathering point - a hitching post with water troughs where farmers and ranchers could leave their animals while they went about their shopping. It was the women of the town who eventually pushed to transform the rough-edged lot into a proper park.

Take a seat in Plaza Park and you're sitting in a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. The park and its surrounding traffic circle were added to the register in 1982 as part of the Plaza Historic District. Look beyond the park's borders and you'll see a treasure trove of architectural sites - a square mile filled with beautifully preserved buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, each telling its own story of Orange's past. In 2018, the American Planning Association further recognized the park by designating it a Great Place in America, citing it as a notable example of community gathering space and thoughtful urban planning.
Community Gatherings
Despite its compact size, this park hosts several community events throughout the year. It really comes alive during the Christmas season, transforming into a winter wonderland with twinkling lights and hosting an annual tree lighting ceremony that brings everyone together.
Just steps away from Chapman University, the park sits at the hub of Orange's charming downtown district. You're surrounded by unique boutiques, cozy restaurants, and so many antique shops that the area has earned its nickname as the "Antique Capital of California".
Why It's Worth a Visit
Regardless of whether you're spreading out a picnic blanket, cracking open a book on one of the benches, or just soaking in the atmosphere, Plaza Park offers a pocket of tranquility in the midst of urban life. It's a place where you might see students, families, and tourists all sharing the same space, creating a genuine sense of community.
