Shaffer Park
About Shaffer Park
Park Overview
Situated in Orange, California, Shaffer Park spans a comfortable 7.32 acres of community-friendly space. After a major facelift, the park reopened its gates on April 13, 2019, showing off its refreshed facilities and infrastructure. What you'll notice right away is the peaceful, clean atmosphere that makes this spot a wonderful retreat for families looking to spend some quality time outdoors.
Sports Facilities
For those interested in sports activities, The park houses a lighted baseball/softball field complete with dugouts and an all-dirt infield. There's also a lighted football field (though you'll need to bring your own goal posts) and a lighted soccer field (similarly, BYO goals). On any given day, you'll likely spot teams practicing or friends enjoying a casual game.
Fitness buffs will appreciate the outdoor exercise circuit with equipment that lets you get in a solid full-body workout. What's especially thoughtful is that the equipment is positioned where parents can watch their kids play while breaking a sweat themselves. Plus, those shade sails overhead mean you won't be exercising under the blazing sun.
Playground Area
The little ones haven't been forgotten - far from it. The park features two separate playgrounds that cater to different age groups. Both play areas come with shaded play structures protected by shade sails, with wood chips cushioning the ground below for safer tumbles and falls. Kids can enjoy spring riders, swing across monkey bars, or test their skills on the balance beam.
Parents can relax on one of the many benches surrounding the playgrounds, making it easy to keep an eye on the adventure without having to stand the whole time.
Community Amenities
The park's community building comes equipped with climate control and a kitchen that can host up to 130 people. It's available for rent and has been used for various events from corporate meetings to church picnics.
For outdoor gatherings, there's a picnic pavilion that accommodates up to 75 people, plus several covered picnic tables and BBQ stations scattered throughout the grounds. These spots are ideal for birthday celebrations or family reunions, with plenty of tables and grills to go around.
Walking Paths & Landscaping
Winding through the park are walking paths surrounded by drought-resistant landscaping - a nod to California's water-conscious environment. You can choose between two loops measuring 0.27 miles and 0.40 miles if you're keeping track of your distance. These paths are particularly popular with dog walkers and those looking to get their steps in while enjoying some greenery.
Accessibility & Amenities
Shaffer Park strives to welcome everyone, with ADA access extending to various areas including the playground (or Tot Lot, as it's officially known). You'll also find practical amenities like restrooms, drinking fountains, bicycle racks, and spectator bleachers for those supporting the athletes on the fields.
While the restrooms are maintained regularly, cleanliness can vary depending on when you visit. There's also a parking lot available, but you might want to arrive early during sporting events when spaces fill up quickly.
