About the Location
Recreation Spaces
Blackbird Park's sprawling grassy areas give you plenty of room to stretch out and play. Whether you're up for an impromptu soccer match or gathering friends for some volleyball, there's space to make it happen. Sports fans will love the 300-foot baseball field complete with team dugouts, bullpens, bleachers, a scoring table, and some pretty solid fencing.
There are two separate playgrounds for children of different ages. The little ones have their own special area, while older children can enjoy a more challenging playground featuring three big slides, monkey bars, a climbing rock, and enough swings that you won't have to referee turn-taking (well, most of the time).
Puppy Paradise
Dog owners will appreciate that Blackbird Park features two dog parks where your four-legged friends can run free. Smaller pups can enjoy the cozier half-acre area with rolling hills and more shade, while larger dogs have room to zoom around in the spacious 1.6-acre enclosure. Both areas have grass and typically don't get too crowded, so your dog can socialize without feeling overwhelmed.
Note that the dog water fountain sometimes gets clogged, so it's wise to bring your own water supply, especially on those scorching Sacramento days.
Community Garden
If you've got a green thumb, you'll appreciate the community garden known as Blackbird Common Garden. With approximately 58 standard plots and 4 ADA-accessible ones, it's a little touch of agricultural heaven. The setup includes a communal area, compost bins, a storage shed with shared tools, and a couple of tables where you can take a break from tending your veggies.
Amenities and Accessibility
Blackbird Park is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring wheelchair-friendly paths around the grounds. Parking is a breeze thanks to the large lot. When you're ready to relax, head to the covered patio area with tables, benches, and a barbecue meant for family gatherings.
At 9.93 acres, this community park is well-maintained, however it's worth mentioning that the trees are still young, which means shade can be scarce on hot days. One important heads-up: there are no restrooms at Blackbird Park itself. If nature calls, you'll need to trek about a mile to a neighboring park with facilities.
