About the Location

A Square with History

Tucked between I and J Streets in downtown Sacramento lies a 2.5-acre green oasis with quite a backstory. César Chávez Plaza began its journey in 1849 as one of ten public squares gifted to the city by John A. Sutter, Jr. Over the years, this space has been known by several names - City Plaza, Plaza Park - before receiving its current title honoring the renowned civil rights leader César Chávez.

The Look and Feel

Walk through the plaza today and you'll notice its timeless design elements that have survived since 1872 when John Keating first laid them out: a central fountain that represents the heart of the space, cross-axial walkways that invite exploration, and circular paths well-suited for a leisurely stroll. Towering palm trees cast dappled shadows while native plants add splashes of color and texture to this downtown retreat.

The plaza doesn't stand alone in its grandeur - it's framed by some of Sacramento's most impressive architecture. The Beaux-Arts style City Hall rises majestically to the north, while the Renaissance Revival style Central Library creates a stunning western boundary. The area is designated as part of the Plaza Park/Central Business District Historic District.

Where Sacramento Comes Alive

During summer, César Chávez Plaza becomes a popular outdoor concert venue. The Concerts in the Park series draws thousands every Friday night for free live music spanning everything from soulful R&B to foot-stomping country. Food vendors line the perimeter, the stage comes alive with talent, and sometimes you'll even find secure bike parking for those who pedal downtown.

But the fun doesn't stop when summer ends. Throughout the year, the plaza hosts colorful cultural celebrations, festivals, and community gatherings that showcase Sacramento's diverse population, including events like La Cosecha that bring people together from across the city.

More Than a Pretty Space

Beyond its aesthetic appeal and events, the plaza offers practical amenities for Sacramento residents. Every Thursday, a weekly certified farmers' market pops up, offering fresh, local produce to downtown workers and residents looking for healthy options.

During lunch hours, you'll find office workers stretched out on benches or under the shade of those magnificent palms, taking a much-needed break from the daily grind - especially welcome during Sacramento's scorching summer days.

Grab a Bite

Feeling hungry while exploring the plaza? La Cosecha, a Mexican restaurant within the park, offers outdoor dining with a view. There's something special about enjoying a meal surrounded by both history and greenery in the heart of the city.

Getting Better with Age

The plaza hasn't remained static over the years. In 2012, it received a refresh with new turf, planter boxes, benches, and an upgraded concert stage. More recently in 2023, additional amenities were introduced to make visits more comfortable, including the long-awaited addition of public restrooms.

While César Chávez Plaza continues to be a vital part of Sacramento's urban landscape and community life, it does face challenges common to many city parks, including issues related to homelessness and ongoing maintenance needs - areas the city continues to address.
