About the Location
Historic Roots
Tucked away in East Sacramento, California, McKinley Park spreads across 32 acres of urban sanctuary with a story dating back to 1871. Originally known as East Park (created by the Sacramento Street Railway Company), it was renamed in 1902 to honor President William McKinley after his assassination. Walking through this park today, you're literally strolling through a piece of Sacramento history.

Natural Landscape
The moment you enter McKinley Park, you're greeted by an impressive variety of trees framing the space - ginkgos, mulberries, and sycamores line the perimeter, while mature London planes, elms, oaks, and towering coast redwoods create natural gathering spots across the grounds. It's like nature's architecture, providing shade and character in equal measure.
The park offers two expansive green meadows - one nestled in the northwest corner and another stretching across the eastern side. These make good spots for picnics or for those lazy Sunday afternoons when you need a break from the city pace.

Renowned Rose Garden
If you're looking for a touch of elegance, head to the Fredrick N. Evans Memorial Rose Garden in the southeast corner of the park. Established in 1928, this garden stands out with its structured oval design that feels distinctly different from the rest of the park's casual vibe.
With over 1,200 rose bushes displaying their colorful blooms, it's no wonder this spot has become a favorite backdrop for wedding photos and special occasions. The fragrance alone is worth the visit when the roses are in bloom.

Lake Kiesel
For a moment of tranquility, Lake Kiesel offers a peaceful retreat in the southwest section of the park. What started as remnants of a slough has been transformed into a naturalistic lake where local waterfowl paddle about their day. You might find yourself lingering longer than planned, watching ducks glide across the water while taking a mental break from the hustle of everyday life.

Community Hub
McKinley Park is also a social gathering place throughout the year. The park hosts outdoor concerts, cultural festivals, morning fitness classes, and seasonal farmers' markets. It's a popular spot where many Sacramento residents come together to enjoy outdoor activities.
