Park Overview

Found in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, Charles Lewis III Memorial Park offers a 6.2-acre green escape from urban life. Opened in June 2005, this gated space honors former District 4 Councilmember Charles L. Lewis III, who worked to establish this park.

Even though it sits along a busy street, the park is relatively peaceful - a green space where you can take a break and spend some time outdoors.

Skate Park

Skaters, rejoice! The park's crown jewel is its 7,000 square foot skate park complete with above-ground ramps and rails. Whether you're practicing kickflips or just watching the local talent, this area brings a vibrant energy to the park.

Landscape and Pathways

Winding paths cut through lush grassy areas, making for pleasant walks surrounded by native plants and trees. It's fantastic for a casual stroll, a quick exercise session, or simply appreciating some local greenery.

While you can find several shaded spots scattered throughout the park, most aren't in the main hangout areas. If you're a sun-seeker, though, you'll have plenty of sunny spaces to enjoy.

Family Facilities

Kids have plenty of room to play here. The park features two playgrounds designed with different age groups in mind, giving the little ones safe places to burn off energy. The main playground is fenced - a thoughtful touch given how close the park is to busy streets.

Got a basketball fan in the family? The concrete half basketball court offers a place to shoot some hoops. And the expansive grassy area provides a wonderful blank canvas for impromptu games, birthday celebrations, or just spreading out a picnic blanket.

Pet-Friendly Areas

Dog parents will appreciate the fenced dog park area where four-legged friends can run free. This space is especially roomy and long, making it ideal for games of fetch or just letting your pup sprint to their heart's content.

The dog park is a hit with locals, but keep in mind there's not much shade here - so on hot days, you might want to plan your visits for mornings or evenings.

Gathering Spaces

Need a spot for a get-together? The park's picnic areas and small gazebo create natural gathering points. The covered picnic section includes several tables with plenty of room for group activities. Just note that you can't reserve these spaces - it's first come, first served.

Amenities

You'll find public restrooms with two toilets and two sinks in both the men's and women's facilities. Fair warning: cleanliness can be hit-or-miss. Some days they're spotless, other times they might need some attention.

Access Information

The park keeps things simple with just two entrances at the east and west ends. One thing to prepare for: there's only street parking available, which can sometimes be scarce. You might need to walk a bit from your car to reach the park entrances, so plan accordingly if you're carrying picnic supplies or have mobility concerns.
