About the Location
Location and Views
Perched at the base of Mount Soledad in Pacific Beach, Kate Sessions Memorial Park spans a generous 79 acres of San Diego greenspace. From this vantage point, you can take in panoramic views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and the downtown San Diego skyline.
The park bears the name of a local legend - Kate Sessions, a pioneering horticulturist and landscape architect fondly known as the "Mother of Balboa Park." In 1957, on what would have been her 100th birthday, the park was dedicated in her honor, preserving her legacy in this beautiful natural space.
Park Layout
Kate Sessions is essentially a park of two personalities. The northern section offers a practical, relatively flat terrain featuring a playground for children. Here you'll find expansive grassy areas excellent for picnics, impromptu soccer games, or just relaxing with a good book.
The southern section features a steep downward slope that provides excellent views of the surrounding area. A paved walking path loops around this area, ideal for a leisurely stroll or walking your four-legged friend. The sloped grassy hills aren't just for admiring - they're ideal for stretching out on a blanket or, if you're feeling a bit adventurous, rolling down like a kid again.

Activities and Amenities
The park accommodates both family picnics and active recreation. The spacious grassy areas provide plenty of room for tossing a frisbee, playing touch football, or simply hanging out with friends and family.
You can find all the practical necessities here: clean restrooms, designated picnic areas, and occasionally the park hosts outdoor events including summer concerts that bring the green space to life. Many locals gather here for sunset viewings and to watch SeaWorld fireworks displays during holidays.
If outdoor cooking is your thing, barbecue grills are available throughout the park, with trash receptacles conveniently placed for easy cleanup after your feast.
Natural Features
Beyond the recreational areas, Kate Sessions includes pockets of natural habitat showcasing native plant species and providing sanctuary for local wildlife. During winter months, a small seasonal creek meanders through the park, adding a tranquil soundtrack to your visit. Keep your eyes peeled for the amusing sight of ground squirrels and gophers popping up from their burrows across the grounds.
The diverse landscape here accommodates everything from peaceful nature appreciation to more energetic pursuits like hiking and sports.
Visitor Information
Dog lovers will appreciate that Kate Sessions is very dog-friendly, but do note that leashes are required at all times. Also worth mentioning - alcohol is not permitted within the park.
The park welcomes visitors daily from 7AM to 10PM. Given its popularity, especially during weekends, sunset hours, and special events, parking can sometimes be challenging. You might want to arrive early or consider alternative transportation. If the main lot is full, street parking is usually available in the surrounding neighborhood.
