About the Location

A Community Centerpiece

Found in the Rancho Bernardo neighborhood of San Diego, this sprawling 38-acre green space is a hub for local recreation. Whether you're looking to shoot some hoops, let the kids burn off energy, or simply enjoy a peaceful afternoon under mature shade trees, Rancho Bernardo Community Park has something for everyone.

The park's focal point is the Rancho Bernardo-Glassman Recreation Center, built in 1995 and renamed in 2002 to honor Stuart Glassman - a passionate volunteer who poured his heart into developing recreational opportunities for the community. This center buzzes with indoor activities and year-round programs that bring neighbors together.

Park Features

Wide, open grassy fields stretch beneath the shade of established trees, creating a naturally inviting space for frisbee games and picnic blankets. The thoughtful layout accommodates everything from quiet reflection to active play.

If you have little ones in tow, you'll appreciate the two playgrounds designed with different age groups in mind. The toddler area comes complete with baby swings, while a separate section caters to bigger kids with more adventurous equipment. One playground features a sand surface (beach toys welcome!), while the other uses wood chips - both designed with safety in mind.

The park's large outdoor gazebo acts as a natural gathering spot and provides welcome shade during sunny San Diego days. You'll also find plenty of benches scattered throughout the grounds - well-suited for catching your breath or enjoying a packed lunch.

Sports and Recreation

Sports enthusiasts will feel right at home here. The park has eight clearly numbered ballfields, making it easy to find your game. Two outdoor basketball courts remain illuminated into the evening hours, extending your play time after the workday ends. Six tennis courts stand ready for friendly matches or serious competition.

For something a bit different, try your hand at horseshoes, or head inside to the gymnasium where volleyball and pickleball courts await. Speaking of pickleball - the recreation center hosts indoor sessions Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 AM, with a smart panel system that keeps games rotating efficiently.

Fitness buffs can take advantage of pull-up bars and additional exercise equipment distributed around the grounds - no gym membership required.

Walking and Biking

A generous walking trail loops around the entire park, offering a peaceful circuit for morning joggers, afternoon strollers, and everyone in between. The path doesn't stop at the park boundaries either - it connects to trails near Lake Hodges, letting you extend your outdoor adventure as far as your legs will carry you.

The wide, paved pathways within the park create an ideal training ground for young cyclists. You can teach the kids to ride in a traffic-free environment with plenty of space to wobble and practice.

Dog Park

At the southern end of the park, a two-acre dog park gives four-legged friends room to run and socialize. This thoughtfully designed space includes separate sections for small dogs, large dogs, and mixed play, ensuring every pup can find their comfort zone. Even beyond this dedicated area, the entire park maintains a dog-friendly atmosphere, with many visitors walking leashed pets along the paths.

Amenities

You'll come across clean restrooms throughout the park, along with convenient vending machines when thirst strikes. Parking is plentiful around the perimeter, however spaces can fill up quickly during baseball season or special events - arriving early never hurts.

Community Events

The park really shines as a community gathering space, hosting outdoor movie screenings under the stars during summer months and organized runs year-round. These events, combined with everyday recreation opportunities, make Rancho Bernardo Community Park an important place for both community gatherings and personal enjoyment.
